Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai

Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, based in Chennai, is a foremost institute of yoga and yoga studies. It started in 1976 and conducts many short term and long term programs for students from India and abroad. These programs are based on a wide variety of themes dealing with yoga and other related subjects.

This yoga mandiram conducts a 2 year part time diploma on yoga and the course outlines certain aspects of Indian culture, theoretical and practical aspects of yoga, application of yoga to modern therapeutic needs as well as the study of some vital olden texts on yoga. The course prospectus also include a 6 month internship under the guidance of a senior teacher and the classes are organized twice or thrice a week.

Krishnamacharya's mission was to heal people through yoga. Yoga therapy, till today, is a trademark of KYM. Therapy at KYM is not restricted to just curing physical illness, but extends to holistic healing to those seeking relief from any problem be it mental, physical, emotional or spiritual. Here students are not just cases or numbers, but each individual is taught personally with the focus on dealing with the cause rather than the symptoms of the problems.

KYM institute of yoga studies was started in 1988 as a separate wing of Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram with the purpose of spreading the teachings of T Krishnamacharya. This goal is accomplished through training programs, seminars and workshops which deal with numerous topics and themes. These are offered to Indians as well as students from abroad.

International Programs

The KYM institute of yoga studies conducts short term courses for individuals and groups from various countries on several yoga related topics. These are highly individualized and are intended to suit the requirements of the visiting individual or group. Intensive courses were originally offered to private groups from different parts of the world upon request. From 1997, a one month intensive training, covering the wide range of pranayama, asana and dhyana as taught by T Krisnamacharya was officially conducted every November. This course began to be presented twice a year from 2002 onwards as demand for participation in this intensive course increased. Also, an advanced 2 week residential retreat is being offered once a year from 2002.

Apart from the programs offered by KYM yoga institute, KYM also continues to arrange and conduct programs for private groups on a wide range of themes upon request, besides offering classes to individual students who want private one to one lessons.

KYM's Approach to Research

Yoga, as any other alternate system would profit from a scientific approach to gain insight into its various dimensions without having to compromise on its fundamental values and structure. This calls for a thorough attempt to untie and understand the role of yoga in therapy or promotion of health using a scientific model which would include the various dimensions of the system.

KYM's research wing, recognized as a Research Institute by the Government of India conducts detailed research on yoga and its application to suit several needs. The aim is to scientifically and methodically assess the role of yoga.
