Kitchen Sinks: Many Varieties To Choose From
No matter the lifestyle, there is a kitchen sink made to suit every taste.
Whether designing a kitchen in a brand new home or remodeling an out-of-date kitchen, today's kitchen sink manufacturers offer something for every purpose and for every taste.
Bowled Over
The kitchen sink is one of the most important fixtures in the kitchen. When designing a new kitchen, the needs of the homeowner must be considered before installing just any sink. For instance, a big family is going to have lots of dishes piling up in the sink and having a small one-bowl sink will not be functional. However, if planning a small kitchen due to size constraints and only one or two persons will be using the kitchen, a small kitchen sink may be an exact fit.
Sinks are manufactured in one-bowl, dual-bowl, and even triple-bowl designs in a wide assortment of measurements. Some kitchen sinks have one bowl with a flat drain board attached which doubles as an extra food preparation area or as a place to drain dishes.
Choosing Installations
Another consideration when choosing a kitchen sink is how the sink will be installed in the countertop. There are three basic installation methods for kitchen sinks. The least expensive type is the drop-down sink with a rim, whereby a hole is cut in the countertop and the sink bowl fits down into the hole, while the rim rests on the counter, helping to hold the sink in place.
A more expensive model of sink is known as the undermounted sink and comes up through the bottom of the counter from below. This sink is normally used with granite countertops and the sink itself may be granite as well. The rim of this sink fits flush with the countertop and, depending on the weight, may need additional supports installed below the basin. A heavy-duty sealant is then applied around the rim of the sink to keep it in place.
A newer style of sink making its way into more contemporary kitchens is the apron sink. With this style of sink, the bowl is usually a large square or rectangle and is also undermounted; however, the front of the counter is cut away so that the "apron" or front of the sink shows. The front usually has some type of decoration to match the kitchen decor.
Popular Materials
Kitchen sinks are made from many different materials, the most common being stainless steel. However, today, sinks also come in many other materials such as copper, cast iron, granite, vitreous porcelain and even teakwood are gaining popularity.
