Now by no means am I advocating buying illegal cigars, my point is that since theyre illegal, and thus uncommon in the States, they have a higher value to smokers there. The rareness of them, and the fact that if you ever smoked one it was probably while on vacation in a country that doesnt have an embargo with Cuba, will help carve a special place in your heart for the Cuban cigar. Other countries have an easier time obtaining Cuban cigars, and thus the illicit thrill is less. Yet they still maintain a special cache as the top cigars for those in the know.
The tie between cigars and celebration may have something to do with the grandeur of a cigar. Theyre big, they require preparation, they take a while to smoke, etc. One doesnt just pull a cigar out of a pack, light up, and finish it as part of a regular smoke break. Its something you plan for and do properly. They also arent cheap. Cigars, Cuban or not, cost enough that one attaches a high value to them.
In the end, it makes a lot of sense for cigars to be part of a celebratory ritual, as they seem almost made for such a purpose. This is why you still see people handing out cigars to celebrate birth, either kitschy ones with pink or blue ribbons, bubble gum cigars, or decadent Cuban cigars.
