It Is Important To Maintain Realistic Expectations When Wanting Facial Rejuvenation Procedures

A rhinoplasty is a nose reshaping procedure performed for those whose nose is out

of proportion with other facial features or otherwise does not compliment the face. In most cases, the shape of the nose is determined by genetics, but in some instances it is due to trauma.

This plastic surgery procedure can reduce a hump, make the nose smaller, make changes in the bridge or tip of the nose, or change the angle of the nose. Most often it is also capable of improving breathing problems caused by structural defects in the nose. The goal of an aesthetic rhinoplasty is to provide a natural contour and improved shape, thereby improving the patient's self-esteem.

The surgical approach may be "closed" or "open," depending on the needs of the individual. An open rhinoplasty uses a inconspicuous and small incision under the nose between the nostrils. This will allow for precise correction of the underlying structures. A closed nose job uses incisions that are hidden inside the nostrils and is preferred for relatively minor internal changes. This may include reducing a hump.

After a consultation with your plastic surgeon, he or she will help you determine if you are a good candidate and if you have realistic expectations for your surgery outcome. The ideal patient will be of an age that their facial growth is complete and are healthy, with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind.

The surgery will take two to three hours depending on the extent of the surgery and is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.

There are several other facial rejuvenation procedures that patients can elect to receive. Eyelid lift surgery is a procedure to correct excess eyelid skin and to treat prominent fat pads. Excess skin weighing down the upper lids, and fat pads in the lower lids, can make a person look very tired or drained. This cosmetic surgery procedure can be performed on both lower and upper lids.

Brow descent can occur over time and contribute to the upper lid skin excess. For this reason, brow position should be evaluated in all cases where upper lid blepharoplasty is considered. In the past, long incisions were required to correct brow descent, but modern techniques allow brow elevation with only a few small incisions. Sometimes minor procedures may be done through the upper lids to elevate the brow.

Cheek descent can contribute to a tired look by increasing the vertical dimension of the lower lid and worsening the nasolabial fold (crease from the nose to the corner of the mouth). This area is often called the mid-face, and it is not improved by conventional face lifting procedures. Cheek descent may be improved with fat grafts or suspension with sutures. The cheek lift is called a meloplasty.

Upper lid procedures may take an hour under local anesthesia. Brow lifts, cheek lifts or lower lid procedures are performed under general anesthesia and take around two hours to perform.
