Is It Weird For A Man To Get Liposuction?

It comes as no surprise to the average American that liposuction (which is also referred

to as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy) is an extremely popular surgery. Just about anywhere one goes, one sees pictures of flawless women and invitations to get a lipoplasty at some surgical center or other.

According to the stereotypes we're used to, cosmetic surgery is a woman's arena. One thing that not everyone knows, though, is that this surgery is beginning to grow in popularity among men.

Currently somewhere between 10 and 20 percent of all lipoplasties performed are done on men. As a percentage, this doesn't sound like much. However, when it's translated into actual numbers, this means that tens of thousands of American men undergo the surgery every year.

Additionally, the surgery's popularity among men is growing. The number of men who undergo liposuction continues to rise, and a number of polls map this similar growth in men's acceptance of this surgery. In one recent survey, a higher percentage of men than women stated that they would be willing to consider undergoing cosmetic surgery. This represents a large change in the way that people think of beauty and gender roles.

Men experience a number of obstacles in getting lipoplasty. One of them is the social awkwardness which comes as stereotypes continue to change. Another one is slightly less expected. The surgery actually costs more for men than for women.

But before men get fired up about anti-male sexism, there is an actual biological reason for this. The surgery is actually more difficult to perform on a man than on a woman. Men tend to have tougher, more fibrous fat than women. This makes it more difficult for a surgeon to be able to break up and remove the fat. This often means a longer surgery time, and thus a higher cost.

Although we've already seen a large change in the way that people think about male lipoplasty, we are probably really only at the beginning of the change. It seems likely that the surgery will continue to grow in its popularity among men, and it seems likely that it will become more and more accepted as time goes on.

There are already lipoplasty advertising campaigns directed exclusively at men. There are already liposuction procedures and techniques that are more popular among men than among women. It is hard to say exactly what the future holds, but it does not seem unreasonable that this growth will continue.
