Importance Of Seven Pheras In Indian Wedding Part- I
In almost every culture in the Indian wedding
, seven vows are taken to mark the bond of marriage, between the bride and the groom, the article describes each phera, as per the pledges taken by the bride and the groom respectively
Indian marriages are famous all over the world, due to their sanctity and the value of marriage as a bond in Indian families. Indian weddings are full of rituals and ceremonies, which are performed to mark one or the other sacred belief and occasion. The marriage ceremonies, in India are full of traditional values, each custom having their own meaning and importance. It is said, each ritual performed in an Indian wedding, has a role to play for strengthening the bond of marriage between the bride and groom. it is also for their better future of the couple, to have a healthy and a happy married life.
On the marriage day, there are many rituals and ceremonies, which are performed by the family members of the bride and the groom and by the couple themselves. The ceremonies are like, jaimala, kanyadan, idol worship, etc, depending on the religion or the state in which the marriage is performed. A common ritual is performed in almost all the religions and cultures is seven circles around the sacred fire or the saat pheras, each phera signifying the importance of being together forever. Seven pheras are taken in front of the holy fire, with the presence of a priest in the mandap of the marriage. The seven vows those marks the start of a happy married life.
Following is the description of the first three pheras of the Hindu marriage culture:
First phera:
In the first phera the couple prays to the god, to seek his blessings for their happy and healthy married life. the first phera also focuses on the importance of god, as the only source, for blessing the bride and groom with a healthy lifestyle and enough food and eatables to lead a healthy life. The groom enchants the mantra- Om esha ekapadi bhava iti prathama, in which he promises to the bride that with each passing day, the bond of their love will become stronger and he will appreciate the food cooked by her for him. Also, their love and affection towards each other will never get less and will make their life happy and cheerful.
The bride says, Dhanam dhanyam pade vadet, meaning, that she will abide by all the decisions taken by the groom and will whole heartedly fulfill all her responsibilities and will take care of his family forever.
Second phera:
In the second phera, the bride and groom prays to god for granting them with mental, physical and spiritual peace to lead a smooth and a contended life after bonding with each other as husband and wife. The groom enchants the mantra , Om oorje jara dastayaha, and says to the bride, that with this second vow, lets promise that we become each others strength and will together work for keeping all the odds and evil powers away from our home and family.
The bride says, Kutumburn rakshayishyammi sa aravindharam, by which she promises the groom, to be always together with him and fill his heart with courage and strength. And will always be truthful to him and will help him in evading out all the negativities and evil powers from the house.
Third phera:
In the third phera, the bride and the groom, together prays to the god, for providing them with wealth, prosperity and intelligence to be able to lead a satisfied lifestyle. They also promise to together maintain the sacred and the religious behaviour and respect towards their god and religion. The groom says, Om rayas Santu joradastayaha, that from now onwards he will consider all other women as his sisters and will give due respect to his wife, and will together pray to go and maintain a holy environment in the home for the flourishment of a better future.
The bride says, Tava bhakti as vadedvachacha, that she will respect him and their relation for the rest of their lives and will see all other men as her brothers. Also, she will shower all her love and affection on him to strengthen their marriage bond.
