Sleep is one of the most precious things in life and many people do not realise how important it is to our mental and physical wellbeing
. When we sleep our body and mind repair themselves and allow us to wake up fresh to face the coming day. However sometimes you can feel as though you have not rested at all and this could be due to a medical reason. I was recently advised to buy a sleep apnoea oximeter for my nephew who has been having some problems.
Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder characterized by abnormal pauses in breathing or instances of abnormally low breathing, during sleep. Each pause in breathing, called an apnoea, can last from at least ten seconds to minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Sleep apnoea is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnography, or "sleep study". My nephew went for this and they found out that he has a mild form of sleep apnoea which needed to be monitored.
The test monitors various physiological factors during sleep, including brain electrical activity, eye and jaw muscle movement, leg muscle movement, airflow, respiratory effort, EKG, and oxygen saturation. These tests are to determine the frequency of apnoea's during sleep and the body's reaction to the sleep apnoea. At home it is possible to use pulse oximetry, along with a clinical score, as an effective screening tool for sleep apnoea. This approach, though not as accurate as polysomnography, is much simpler, low cost and can be done at home by the patient using a sleep apnoea oximeter, readily available to buy.
Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive method of measuring the oxygen saturation of haemoglobin (SpO2) in arterial blood. It is measured using an oximeter and there are various types available. It can thus be considered an indirect measure of tissue oxygen delivery. It is used in both the initial screening and on-going monitoring of patients to detect hypoxemia. It helps us to assess the patient's response to therapy, and to detect any deteriorating trends in arterial oxygen saturation.
There is the children oximeter which is sturdy and the veterinarian oximeter which is used widely to check the pulse rate of animals.
