How to Add Ginger to Your Diet

Ginger, also referred to as ginger root, is a tropical spice that grows underneath the ground. It has for many centuries been used as a medicine to help relieve many common ailments as well as prevent serious diseases. But it is also a spice or a herb that you can add to your daily diet without any side effects.

The zesty flavor of ginger goes well with just about any dish, but here are a few ideas to help you to add ginger to your diet.

Tea

Ginger tea is great for helping you to relieve indigestion after a large meal. To make the tea simply grate about 1/2 inch of ginger and allow it to steep in a cup of water for about 10 minutes. You can add other spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves, and a natural sweetener such as agave nectar for a rich tea.

Salad Dressings

Grated ginger, or the juice of ginger is an excellent addition to homemade salad dressings. Simply mix the ginger with some olive oil, minced garlic, fresh lemon juice and a dash of black pepper and unrefined sea salt. The dressing goes well on green salads as well as garden salads.

This dressing can also be used on steamed vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, carrots, potatoes and peppers.

Fresh Juice

If you have a juicer and enjoy fresh fruit or vegetable juices, then you will love the tangy taste of ginger in with those juices. It goes very well with pineapples, mangoes, oranges, apples, pears and peaches.

Nut Milk

The juice of ginger also goes very well in your nut milk. Simply make the milk as usual, then add the ginger juice along with other ingredients such as vanilla, cinnamon and agave.

To make the nut milk soak 1 cup of nuts in water in the fridge overnight. In the morning drain the water and blend with about 3 to 4 cups of fresh water. Then using a cheese cloth or a nut milk bag strain the milk from the fiber.

To obtain the juice from the ginger, grate the ginger and using a cheese cloth squeeze the juice from the fiber.

Ginger root is available in the fresh produce section in most grocery stores year round. To select fresh ginger root look for a firm outer skin, and one that is free from mold. To prepare the ginger for use in your meals simply wash and peel the outer skin. The ginger will remain fresh for several weeks in your fridge provided that you do not peel the root.
