Everyone in the online business talks about using keywords. They say
that you have to use the right keywords in order to be successful in
your advertising. They say there are long tail keywords and short
tail keywords. To me that sounds like their talking about some dogs
tail. So, just what are keywords and how do you use them?
The term, long tail, originally came about in 2004. It was used by big
companies like Amazon, as a business strategy. They were able to niche
down their advertising to the people that were looking for something
specific.
Short and Long Tail Keywords
A short tail keyword would be, fishing. When someone is searching on
the internet for a good spot to fish, they may just type in, fishing.
A long tail keyword would be, a good fishing spot near Seattle,
Washington. The short tail keywords will get you a lot of clicks, but
little conversions.
When you do your advertising, you want people that are already typing
in long tail keywords, as they know exactly what they are looking for,
they are no longer tire kickers.
Say for example, you are selling fishing gear. If your ad simply
states fishing gear, then you will have a lot of people who are just
being lookey lous, rather than buyers. Your ad needs to state what
type of fishing gear. If some ones friend just caught a twenty one
pound steelhead on a X20 graphite steelhead fishing pole, then that is
exactly what they will be searching for.
It is real important to niche down your keywords from short tail to
long tail, in order to get real buyers. If you try to rank in the
search engines for just fishing, it will cost you a lot of money. You
may get a lot of leads looking at your website, but no real buyers.
The person who is typing in a long tail keyword are looking for
something specific, they are the ones ready to buy and the ones you
want looking at your website.
Have Relevancy and Be Specific
When you do pick your long tail keyword, make sure it is specific to
what your website is all about. If you are selling fishing gear and
your website is all about camp grounds your not going to get high
rankings on the search engines.
Search engines want relevancy. When they put your ad on the front
page, they want people to be happy about clicking on that ad and where
it takes them to. They also want fresh new content, that will keep
others clicking on your site.
It is also very important to use the right keywords if you want your
online home business to have success. If you use the wrong keywords,
how do you expect anyone to find your website. Using the right
keywords can get you on the front page of the search engines. Using
the wrong keywords can get you on say, page ten. What good will that
do for your business or your pocket book?
You have to do a lot of research in order to use the right keyword for
advertising your online business, or even a brick and mortar business,
whether it be a long tail or a short tail. You might know exactly
what your website is all about and what you would search for, but you
cannot predict what a prospect would search for.
Make A List
Think of all the keywords that are in your website and make a list of
what you might search for. Do not think that everyone is an English
major when making your list? Use simple words that are used in every
day language.
Once you have your list, search for those words yourself and see how
many people are also searching for them. Keep changing them around,
making them more long tail and more of your website niche. Most of all
make sure all the keywords you have chosen are on your website,
remember relevancy is very important in ranking high.
For great success in using keywords for your online home business,
always be changing them. Stay ahead of your competition. The world
of online marketing is always changing and you should be too.
