How To Treat Women's Hair Loss

At least as many women suffer from hair loss as men

. There are even experts today who believe that women are afflicted with hair loss more than men. There are actually more possibilities when it comes to treating women's hair loss as compared to men's. Fortunately, if you are a woman, you have some choices when it comes to dealing with your hair loss problem. We will discuss in this article some of the more promising possibilities for dealing with your hair loss.

Everybody knows about Rogaine for men. Did you know that there is a Rogaine for women as well? The clinical name for this is Minoxidil. It works the same way that men's Rogaine works and, according to a few studies, it has a better success rate in regrowing women's hair than it does with men. This is a topical application that you put on your head regularly and it stimulates your follicles so that they will regrow the hair that you have lost. This is the only drug that has been approved by the FDA for hair growth.

Another drug that is getting popular, which hasn't yet been approved by the FDA, is Spinolactone. You consume this one orally. Aldactone is its brand name. It is called a potassium sparing diuretic. This, basically, means that it is a water pill. It is designed to reduce your body's fluid levels while ensuring that you don't lose much needed potassium. Androgens are enzymes and hormones that prevent your hair from growing, and this drug inhibits these in your body. When you take these pills your body is not supposed to recognize the androgens and should keep producing hair normally.

Cimetidine, or Tagamet, is a very popular women's hair loss drug. This is technically a drug that has been used to block ulcers and histamines within your body. It basically allows your body to heal ulcers when they develop. While working on this, scientists discovered that it helped block androgen receptors in your body which reduce the effects of hair loss. Androgens are what directly affect whether or not your hair continues to grow. When they are blocked, nothing in your body can keep your follicles from being productive. It is important to note, however, that this drug has not been approved by the FDA for hair growth so do not take it without your doctor's consent.

Dealing with hair loss varies from woman to woman. Some prefer to just accept the fact that they are losing their hair and do what they can with what they have left. Others fight hard against even the tiniest bit of thinning. You will know which approach is right for you. Before you start taking a bunch of pills, however, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor. He or she can work with you to figure out why you are losing your hair and what the best method for counteracting that cause should be.
