Does Being Hungry Affect What You Buy When You Shop?
Does it make a difference what you buy when you go shopping if you're hungry? My own personal experiences tell me that it most certainly does.
I'm beginning to wonder if I should ever go shopping on an empty stomach again.
Although it might initially seem counter intuitive, having a good meal before doing the weekly food shop possibly could be the next new dieting miracle.
There are plenty of diet pills and supplements that can stop you feeling hungry for long periods of time but, provided you do your food shopping weekly, one good meal beforehand will eliminate hunger long enough to get a sensible shop done.
Not being hungry when I buy food allows me to be objective about the food I buy. Meals are planned and executed with culinary precision. I eat proper healthy meals, even lose a little weight.
If I'm not hungry then I tend to think in terms of sensible meals. I'll work my way around picking up everything I've planned I'll need. I work out how many days and then work out the meals, buy the ingredients etc.
If I'm hungry then it's a different story.

I've noticed that when ever I've been food shopping lately, I've been hungry and I seem to only buy large quantities of rubbish. My ability to plan and budget go out of the window
Surrounded by FOOD! My trolley begins to fill up with things I really don't need but just fancied there and then.
Unfortunately this has drastic consequences to the types of food I choose. Because I'm hungry and my tummy is nagging at me like a spoiled brat I need food I can eat now. For immediate consumption, ready made, ready cooked, ready NOW.
What's going on?
Does feeling hungry release chemicals in the brain that inhibit the ability to follow a mental shopping list? It must do, mustn't it.
Why do I buy far more NOW food than I could ever possibly hope to eat now? I can't eat that much.
Why isn't it such an obvious compromise to just get something small to keep me going? Never think that when I'm hungry.
Why am I elbowing stoned teenagers out of the way to get to the crisps? Normally I don't ever go down that aisle.
I Needed Some Proof
I wanted to take this theory to the next level so I devised an experiment.
Whenever someone was complaining that they were hungry or I knew they had just eaten, I'd ask them to go onto a well known supermarkets online store.
I asked them to imagine they were in the store now. Given a budget of say a tenner. Choose a tenners worth of food.
I also asked them to rate how hungry they were before and after as a number out of 10.
After making a food wish list I asked them to tell me how many meals they would be able to serve from the items they chose.
The results were the same across the board.
Looking at food makes you feel more hungry - People's hunger increased by an average of 3 points out of 10.
People who weren't hungry when they shopped could make on average twice as many meals with the items they bought for the same money as the hungry shoppers.
Potentially and actually very realistically saving 50% of your entire food bill by eating one good meal a week at the right time.
Healthier meals were planned and chosen.
Less calories per meal on average.
