Losing weight can seem like an impossible task. It seems like most people have been conditioned to think that losing weight includes going to the gym and working out relentlessly for hours a day. Well, to be truthful, that is probably the least efficient way to lose weight that I can think of. Here's why: Weight loss is a simple function of calories in vs. calories out. If you want to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume in a day. Once you burn 3500 calories more than you have consumed, then that equals to about a pound of fat. In short if you want to lose weight, then you have to either work out more to burn more calories, or you have to eat less in order to decrease the number of calories that you consume a day. As I previously mentioned, the major problem with losing weight is that most people place far too much importance on losing weight by working out more. But in actuality, it's much easier to change your diet than to work out for hours on end. For example, the average fast-food lunch is about 1,000 calories. If you switch out a fast food lunch for a turkey sandwich, an apple, and a bottle of water, you will save about 500 calories a day, and 3500 calories a week. Thats a pound a week just by eating a healthier lunch! In contrast, if you eat the exact same diet, but run on a treadmill for about 45 minutes a day, you will burn an extra 500 calories a day, and 3500 calories a week. Which would you rather do? Make a 3 second decision to eat a healthier lunch, or run for 45 minutes a day on a treadmill? The trick is to find out how many calories you burn in a day naturally, and then make sure that you eat fewer calories per day than you burn naturally. That way you don't have to spend countless hours slaving away at the gym. Rather, you can just make smarter diet decisions. If you don't know how many calories you burn in a day, then there are two numbers that you should be aware of. The first is called your Basal metabolic Rate (BMR). This number is the number of calories that you would need to sit down and do nothing all day. Your BMR is a function of your Age, Weight, Height, and Gender. The Second number that you should be aware of is your daily calorie burn, this number is the total number of calories that you burn in a day while doing all of your daily activities. This number is computed by multiplying your BMR by a multiplier based on your level of activity.
