How To Ensure That The Breast Pump You Are Using Is Thoroughly Cleaned

Breastfeeding for your baby takes a lot of work and dedication

. There are times when it's not feasibly possible to breastfeed your baby, whether you

need to work, or your baby isn't latching on properly. If this is the case you will want to pump to provide breast milk for your baby.

Here are a few tips on care and cleaning of your breast pump:

It's very important to always wash away any bacteria or germs immediately after use. There will be times you won't be able to get to water and soap,

yet a place to boil the parts. Wiping them off good, with an antibacterial wipe will help. Make sure you get in the entire pieces well, all the nooks

and crannies of the pump parts.

If you know you will not be near a place where you can clean the pump parts properly bring a clean gallon size bag to put your parts into after you've

wiped them down to remove all bacteria, or milk. This will keep them from getting dirty until you can clean them better.

Most pump parts are dishwasher safe, but not all. Consult your pumps manufacturer manual, or their website for more information. Some parts have

electrical components and are not allowed to go into the dishwasher.

If you take a big bowl and place the pump parts into the bowel of water. Make sure all pieces are submerged and microwave them for 8 minutes on high.

You will want to make sure the water got very hot. Hot enough to release steam.

Always allow all parts to air dry once cleaned. You don't want any mold or mildew to inhibit the pieces as that will not be safe for the baby.

Make sure that there is nothing in the tubing. Any condensation or moisture will cause mildew. Remove tubing from the pump, rinse with a little bit

of water, and swing them to remove any droplets of water. With a small eye dropper add a little rubbing alcohol to the tubes, and swish that around.

Hang them to dry.

If you need to pump a few times a day, you can purchase additional parts so that you will always have a clean set ready to go. Each manufacturer sells

extra parts for the pump.

Microwave steam bags are excellent can be reused 20-30 times each. You can steam the tubes by themselves in one bag and the horns and valves in another

bag.

Some people feel its ok to reuse the pump parts as long as they are refrigerated after each use. If you can pump directly into the breast milk bag or

bottle that you will use to feed your baby, you will cut down on any danger of contaminating the milk. The less you have to transfer the milk the better for you and the baby.

This may sound like a lot of work when choosing to pump for your baby, but it's always worth it. As you get used to the process or get into a routine

the task won't seem as indepth.
