How To Choose A Wedding Gift
Our weddings have changed
Our weddings have changed. Back in the 70's, 80's and 90's we used to have day wedding events. Now, especially in the Asian community, that has extended to a week. Our guest list used to be around 100, but now it is 500 if not more. We used to use our relatives houses, community halls, church halls and school assembly halls, but now we want to use five star venues. And so the cost of weddings have increased from the thousands to the the tens of thousands.
We have not really changed, but our new generation has different choices than we did. They don't want to accept anything less than the best. In the old days we used to go to weddings with a box wrapped in blue and tied up in the middle. We used to hand over the box when we would greet the couple, and they used to accept with a smile. We used to give household items: cutlery, glassware, tablecloths, artificial flowers, vases pots and pans, mirror frames, quilt covers, and so on.
Now things have changed. When you get an invitation card now you will often find a little note stating NO BOX GIFT PLEASE. This is a little reminder to old guests that the couple will have all the gifts in storage.
It is very difficult now to choose a gift for the couple. Some of the guests give cash in an envelope, but often you will see NO CASH PLEASE written on the invitation too.
Choosing a gift for a couple is not easy these days. However, if you wish to give a box gift, then the following will be the best choices for the gift. Many people give a box for fun. I used to enjoy the box wrappings and would place the gifts throughout the venue as decor.
If you are still stuck, perhaps you could give a bible, guran geeta, or something religious as a gift. Or, if the groom is a smoker, then give a smoking related gift. Or, give a book about how to raise babies to the bride.
If you are willing to give an expensive gift, then gold is the best option. If you wish to give cash, then it would be nice touch if you gave it in the currency of the country they will visit for their honeymoon.
Or, you could give nappies. These will be special as they will be the first nappies they will use when they have a child. Or, as a humorous gift, you could give XXX underwear with a note saying "use after 20 years... keep fit, or this will be your size...". You can give the catalog of a superstore in wrapping with vouchers. But remember: a gift box is an outdated gift, so be prepared to get funny looks when you give such a gift.
