How Cardio Machines Can Actually Waste Your Time
Prevailing thought and opinion is generally that cardio machines are necessary to lose fat
, get in better condition, and have a better body. This just isn't true.
While cardio machines can be used (and many over the years have done so to great benefit), they are in no way necessary. And many times, they can be a hinderance. Well, "hinderance" might not be the correct term. Let's instead say that other forms of training can get you a better bang for your buck.
For one thing, cardio machines can actually make your training easier. Now, this sounds great, right? Well here's the thing - if your work is easier, that means you're not working as hard, nor are you doing as much work overall. Less work means less results. Not good.
Don't believe me? Tell me this - at roughly the same speed, which is harder? Running on a treadmill, or going outside and running down the street. The actual running down the street is harder. It's because you have to actually move your body through space (instead of staying stationary on a moving belt), be attentive to your surroundings, deal with changes in your location (up and down hills, different running surfaces, etc.), run in the elements, etc.
Now, nobody wants to work hard, right? Of course not. Cardio training isn't fun as it is (for most people), let alone making it harder. But think about this - if your training is a little harder...making you work harder...wouldn't you get more out of it? And wouldn't that mean that you'd get more results? And wouldn't that mean that you could get those results quicker, because less overall training was necessary?
Sounds like it to me.
Given all that...your cardio machines could very likely be wasting your time, if for no other reason, that you have to do more work overall.
Might sound crazy, but think of this...think of people you see that do a lot of running. Most are in pretty decent shape, right? Now think about all the people you see on cardio machines. Most look like crap.
