If you jump into quitting blindly with no emotional or physical plan to guide yourself through the process, you might end up gaining weight for sure. There are simple ways to avoid weight gain that can also help you maintain your determination to quit smoking for good.

The reason that most people want to quit smoking in the first place is because of their health. They want to stop destroying their health so they will stand a better chance of living a longer and healthier life. They want to be around to see their golden years, but they also want to be able to enjoy them once they get there. You can not really look forward to happy and healthy golden years as long as you smoke tobacco. You also will not enjoy those years if you are severely overweight either.

So, how can you avoid the weight issue and still manage to stop smoking at the same time? Make a plan. There are a lot of plans out there already that you might want to try that have been proven to help others quit in a healthy way. Then again, you night do better and feel more in control of the entire situation if you make up your own plan with your own goal and time frame. No one plan will work for everyone and you need to know yourself well enough to know what your limitations are as well as your strengths.

It might be a little more difficult for someone that smokes who is already overweight and it seem almost impossible to tackle both smoking and weight loss at the same time, but it is not. You must have an exercise and diet plan in place on the day you start and use all the willpower you have to stick to it. This will not not mean that you will not slip up from time to time. Cut yourself a little slack, but know when enough slack is enough. If you give yourself too many breaks you will never get anywhere. If you are too hard on yourself, you could wear out quickly and give up all together.

Whether you are over weight when you start your quit smoking plan or not, you have to pick things you can stick with. If you are stepping down gradually from cigarettes, it might be easier to reduce your cigarette count by one every few days. Only allow yourself certain kinds of snacks and instead of using so many snacks, even low fat and low calorie ones, use exercise as a craving buster instead. Go for a walk with your dog, jog in place, play with your kids, go to the gym, anything besides eating or smoking. It is not going to be easy, but you knew that going in, so prepare yourself as best as you can and get down to it!
