Many people who are unaware of the reality of this problem start considering a problem of heart as per its name. But in fact, it is not the case. Heartburn has nothing to do with heart. The main reason of heartburn is in stomach. The stomach valve that is called lower esophageal sphincter is the major cause of this problem.
Function of esophageal sphincter
Esophageal sphincter works as a valve. It controls the secretion of hormones that are associated with the stomach and play their role in digestion. The acidic nature of these hormones helps them to be used as digesting agents. When we eat food, this sphincter become activated and emits hormones that are meant to go into the stomach and not into the esophagus. Sometime during pregnancy, women feel heartburning. This is due to sphincter's secretion going into the esophagus. In normal condition, when this acidic solution enters into the stomach, the lower esophageal sphincter gets closed and is sealed tightly and again opens on further demand. But during pregnancy, due to the placement of baby in abdominal this valve does not close tightly. In contrast, it remains open and that is why its secretions enter inside the esophagus and some part of it also enters inside the throat causing sour effect in the mouth. Heartburn can be serious if no measure is taken for its cure. Especially during pregnancy, one has to be very cautious about such kinds of problems.
