Suffering from heartburn while pregnant is a common problem and is usually due to a couple of reasons.

During pregnancy the body produces the hormone progesterone to soften the muscles of the uterus, but this also relaxes the muscle of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the valve that divides the esophagus and the stomach. When this relaxes, it lets stomach acids reflux up in to the esophagus which causes acid heartburn. Progesterone also slows the wave-like movement in the esophagus and intestines, causing slow digestion.

Also, as the baby gets bigger it puts more pressure on the stomach, causing the LES valve to open.

Some antacids are viewed as safe to take for heartburn during pregnancy, but you should always consult your health care provider before taking them.

Although these medications can sometimes help, a far easier method than treating heartburn while pregnant, is to avoid it in the first place by following some simple, natural steps.

Here are just a few methods to relieve heartburn during pregnancy.

Eat smaller meals, more often, as opposed to a few large meals and take your time to help digestion.

Avoid foods that trigger acid reflux, such as spicy foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, onions, peppers, caffeine and fizzy drinks.

Honey is a natural cure for heartburn while pregnant. Take 1 tablespoon of honey after meals to calm irritation in the esophagus.

Avoid drinking with meals as this puts extra pressure on your stomach, but make sure you drink plenty between meals.

Allow your food to settle for at least 2-3 hours before you lie down.

Sleep with your head and shoulders propped up to keep the acid in your stomach.

Wear loose fitting clothing to avoid extra pressure on your stomach.

When bending down, bend from your knees instead of your waist to minimize the amount of pressure on your stomach and LES.
