High definition television or also called HDTV is much sought after by many households today

. The main reason behind that it provides a resolution that is substantially higher than that of standard-definition television. There are three types of HDTVs are available including LED, LCD and plasma. Customers are very confusing about which is best for them. In order to make buying decision is easier, we bring this HDTV Buying Guide for you.

Buying a High Definition TV:

Widescreen: Customers today are looking for a cinematic experience which is possible in a 16:9 format as against earlier versions of TV with an aspect ratio of 4:3. This means that a resolution of 1920 * 1080 with progressive scans can be viewed on a wide screen 1080 high definition TV. Incidentally Blu-ray movies have this type of resolution.

Contrast ratio: In a HDTV, the difference between the darkest black and the brightest white is the contrast ratio. Your television can produce more colors if the ratio is high. In a HDTV, the screen type, backlighting technology and image processing software used can impact the contrast ratio.

Resolution: Like a Blu-ray movie, most HDTVs have a resolution of 1080p resolution. A few smaller televisions use 720p resolution which suites them well. The numbers of pixels (p) that make up the screen determine the resolution of the HDTV.

LCD TVs: The most popular among HDTVs are the LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs. The major plus points of the LCD TVs are that they are affordable, energy efficient and lightweight. Many fluorescent tubes are placed on the screen of the LCD cells which enable illumination of the picture.

LED TVs: Tiny LEDs illuminate the HDTV screen. It is possible to switch off a few specific LEDs to create better contrasts and colors on the screen. One can enjoy an amazing picture quality while using an OLED HDTV. Flat screens which are even thinner make this a surreal feeling.

Plasma: If you are looking for fast-image response times and some excellent contrast ratios then Plasma TV is the option to choose. The need for extra backlighting is eliminated as individual Plasma cells emit their own light. One of the major challenges in fast moving action scenes and sports is the motion-blur which is seen in many ordinary TVs. This is overcome by the Plasma TV which has a fantastic pixel response and minimizes the impact of the motion-blur. In terms of color reproduction, the Plasma TVs are superior to the LCD TVs. There are however rapid changes in LCD TV technology wherein this aspect is being improved upon.

HDTVs as computer monitors: HDTVs are preferred by many professionals (such as doctors, architects) as a large computer monitor. This is on account of the high-resolution displays which are possible on the HDTVs. Using the 1080p HDTVs; the power of your computer can be maximized. All that is needed is an HDMI, DVI or an RGB connection to connect the HDTV to a laptop or a desktop.
