Groomsmen Gifts - Where To Start?

The best time to start thinking about groomsmen gifts is 3-6 months before the wedding

. Many grooms get so caught up in all the other decisions required of them during the wedding planning process that they either put off or forget about purchasing the groomsmen gifts. Many grooms have been known to order the week before the wedding! Don't let this happen to you. Take charge and plan ahead to save yourself a huge headache and possible embarrassment. The worst that can happen is that you order your groomsman gifts super late. Then the shipper (UPS, FEDEX or the postal service) has weather problems, a truck breakdown or a mis-sort which delays your package and leaves you empty handed.

Be sure to have a list of your groomsmen's full names. This means their first name, middle name and last name. You should find out if someone has a first name that they prefer to use over their birth name. Sometimes, for example, a guy named Charles by birth will go by Chuck. A guy named Richard might prefer Rich. You have to make sure you have this clear. You wouldn't want to give out personalized gifts with first names engraved only to have one or two guys groan at seeing a name that they don't like or don't go by.

Make sure you know the difference between two important forms of personalization of gifts: initials versus a monogram. Both are three letters. The huge differences are the order of the letters and the look of the letters. For initials, the letters are all the same size and are capital letters. They are done in the order of first name, middle name and last name. For a monogram, the letters are sized differently. The center letter is large in a monogram and represents the last name. So, the proper order for letters in a monogram are as follows: first name, last name, middle name. The last name is prominent and large. Once you understand the different between initials and monogram, you've learned the most complicated part of selecting engraved gifts.

Set your budget and stick to it. Can you afford $20 groomsman gifts? $40? $100? Pick your dollar amount per gift that you are comfortable spending. Try to look at only gifts in your price range. If you can only afford $20 per gift, you'll only bum yourself out and waste time if you're checking out stuff that is $100. That makes no sense.

The best thing to remember about buying your groomsmen gifts is to pick something that you yourself would probably think is cool or useful. And, do yourself a favor, don't wait until 3 days before your wedding to order the wedding party gifts.
