Do not eat simply because it is mealtime. Rather eat smaller portions and more often. Eating five or six smaller meals every day will cause your body to release less insulin, which in turn will keep your blood sugar levels steadier and make the hunger pains easier to control.

If you are in a job where you do not get a fair amount of exercise, such as most office jobs, begin to take a brisk walk for at least half an hour daily. When you need to buy fresh milk or bread from the corner store, walk rather than drive. Moderate exercise is always an essential component of a long term diet. Without getting any exercise your body simply can't burn all those calories!

Your next step should be to use smaller plates when you eat. It has been shown scientifically that if you are faced with a huge amount of food at mealtime, you tend to eat more than if the portions are smaller. Repeat the exercise with things like coffee mugs, especially if you drink a lot of sugar in your coffee or tea. An even better idea is to stop using sugar in your hot drinks and replace it with a natural substance such as honey.

Increase the portions of vegetables you eat during meals. Most vegetables such as beans, zucchini, tomatoes and cucumbers are great sources of nutrition and don't contain nearly the same amount of calories as fatty meats. There are many other types of nutritious foods that are non-fattening, including soups and salads.

A clever idea is to add vegetables to your recipes to give it volume. This will give you more food while decreasing your calorie intake. You could for example do this with pastas, pies and omelettes.

Attempt to limit your intake of white foods - they normally are rich in calories. Use whole grain rice and brown sugar instead of white rice and white sugar. Replace white bread with whole grain bread.
