Girls Need To Take Over Tech
In many ways the influence of proliferating technology on the world has been positive
, but in one way that proliferation has actually caused us to take steps backwards. The Internet has always been dominated by a male perspective, from the very root of its architecture to the attitudes expressed on its pages. Now, some female voices are beginning to be heard, and the emergence of girl games online suggests that gaming is paying attention to women. But significantly more needs to be done.
Back in the days when the technology that made the Internet possible was being put in place, the technology industry was almost entirely male. In the laboratories of the early leaders in computer technology the only women present were probably answering phones. The brainpower that laid the track for technological advancement had a decidedly male bias.
E-commerce dominates the Internet today, but in the early days there weren't the tools available to enable people to buy things over the net. Then, the primary purposes of the Internet were communication, entertainment, and promotion. The communication business, the entertainment business, and the advertising industry were also overwhelmingly dominated by men at that time, so the male perspective made an indelible mark when the Internet was just getting started.
As a result, the Internet has been home to an unfortunate shift in the way that women are portrayed and perceived. Early on, pornography swept across the Internet, and it is still one of the largest industries online, spreading provocative images of women far and wide. The gaming industry soon joined it, representing women in ways that can only come from juvenile male fantasies.
Clearly, these representations have had a profound effect on young people, both men and women. Girls today are highly influenced by media because they get most of their impressions of what they're supposed to be like from it. Those impressions overwhelmingly substitute a short skirt and karate kicks for an A in science class; so it's little wonder that the skirts are getting shorter and the grades are getting worse. Boys are being taught what to look for in women from video games, so we shouldn't be particularly surprised if they don't express a high level of respect toward the girls in their class.
An idealized version of what a woman could be glorified the strength that it took for generations of women to establish themselves as equal participants in society. Now the very tools that are contributing to such tremendous social and political change around the world threaten to undermine that position and push women back into the stone age, where she is marginalized, abused, and objectified.
Young women have to take up the mantle and stand with the same strength possessed by women of previous generations, or they will lose their liberated state. Young female leaders need to emerge; they need to be fearless with their voices. If there are enough voices crying, the wilderness has to listen.
Young women in the arts are making their voices heard. More female commentators are appearing online every day. The girl games online may seem trivial, but they are emblematic of a balancing of gender representations. These changes are flames that need to be fanned with attention and with active support, or else the position of women in our society may continue to decline.
