Funny Weight Loss Myths Exposed

Every time Im in the gym, I need to have my headphones with me

. Reason being is because I cant stand the sight of people doing the dumbest things or especially talking about their out dated routines that havent brought them any results since the Regan administration was in the White House. And if I dont have my headphones with me, usually its a horrible workout. Maybe Im crazy, but I have tried to help people in the past and they just look at me like I have eyeballs coming out of my forehead. So what Ive decided to do was blow the lid off of the top weight training myths around that are geared towards losing weight.

Myth 1: you have to do high repetitions to get cut. I dont know where this myth came from but its absolutely bogus. The only real thing that I can think of is that you might burn little extra calories from the increased amount of repetitions, but in the end when your calories are low, you dont want to do this in the weight room. You actually want to be lifting heavy and hard to force your body to hold on your precious muscle as best as possible. You might get a pump from all those repetitions which will look good if you have low levels of body fat, but you wont be getting more cut in the process from high reps.

Myth 2: You need to perform crunches to get a six pack. This is another dumb myth, which I believe is popular because its so simple to believe. Go for the burn, do 100 crunches and you will have a six pack. Guess what, the obese person at McDonalds has a six pack. My grandma has a six pack. Everyone has a six pack; its just a matter of dieting off the excess belly fat so that you can see the six pack. The six pack is actually called the rectus abdominus and it has tendon insertions that give it that six pack look.

Myth 3: You need to be in your fat burning zone to lose fat. This is another myth that I hate because study after study shows its better to burn the most calories possible, aka workout at high intensities and you will burn more body fat at a faster pace. Look at the bodies of sprinters. They do zero aerobic work and they are ripped up with muscle. There is a reason for this. By working out at higher intensities every day, you will be incurring an oxygen debt within your body. This oxygen debt will actually lead to an increase in metabolism. This is called EPOC or elevated post oxygen consumption. Your body is going to need more calories in order bring itself back to homeostasis.

These are just 3 of the top myths that popped into my head. I will write future articles on more of them as I see what goes on at my local gym. But I promise I will be wearing those headphones.
