For Sale - A Dream Of Wedding Day Bliss
It's one thing to come across a toaster or guitar for sale in your local newspaper's classified ads columns
. But when it's a latex - never worn - then there has to be a story of heartache and shattered dreams behind it. JANE SIMON spoke to two women who chose their Lycra Spandex Cyan with Red Pink Spiderman Latex Costume Latex with excitement, anticipation and love. But for different reasons, their big day was never to be - and their dream costume latex ended up in the small ads...Helen Walter is a 22-year-old media student. She lives with her parents in Wolverhampton. She placed an advert for her latex in the Birmingham Evening Mail.
I REALLY thought Robert was the one for me. I was just 16 when I met him, he was 23 and I thought he was a dream. We went out together for almost two years before the subject of marriage came up. At that time I wanted nothing more than to spend my life with him. I'd finished college and got a job in a sewing factory. Rob was an established builder, doing well. The next step for me was to get married, buy a house and have babies - it seemed so natural.
And my wishes started to come true. On my 18th birthday we got engaged and a year later, moved into our own home in Horwich, near Bolton. We set a wedding date - June 14, 1997 - shortly after moving in. It gave us two years to organise everything and save up.I bought every Lycra Spandex Deep Blue Spiderman Costume outfit latex with Red magazine available, made long lists and visited loads of wedding fairs. The hall was booked and the caterer sorted out. The only thing missing was my costume latex. I'd set my heart on a beautiful designer gown pictured in one of the magazines.
It was very plain striped organza silk and it came with a bolero jacket. It looked so sophisticated. But it was pounds 900 and there was no way I could afford it.Then one day my sister Laura came home from a shopping trip with some exciting news. She'd been to a local ex-catalogue clothes warehouse which had just taken delivery of more than a thousand smoke-damaged bridal gowns.I went to the warehouse with my mum, Eileen, and we spent hours going through the blackened costume latex. I hoped I'd find something decent and within my price range. I couldn't believe it when my mum pulled out the very costume latex I'd dreamed of!
It was black and smelly so we managed to get it for just pounds 90. When it came back from the cleaners it took my breath away. It was beautiful.Looking back it was a strange time because although all the preparations were in place, Rob seemed to go quiet when the
latex legging was mentioned. I guess I was so wrapped up in getting married I didn't see the cracks developing in our relationship.About 11 months before we were due to marry, Rob asked if we could put the date back. The look on his face showed me he wanted more than that, so I asked him if he wanted to call the whole thing off.
He said, 'Yes'. I felt my world had fallen apart. Rob said that he felt too pressured to go ahead with the wedding and he thought a split would be for the best. We cancelled all the arrangements - it cost us pounds 1,000 in lost deposits - and I relinquished my share of the house and moved back home.I just wanted to put it all behind me. I was upset because I'd thought Rob was so right for me and embarrassed that after all the planning and discussions there would be no wedding. But I was determined to recover and even started to make plans to buy a house of my own. Then one night I was having a drink with my sister Faye, 23 and a friend Susan, also 23, in our local pub. They gave me a good talking to. They thought I was tying myself down by buying a house and I should be out living and enjoying different experiences.
I decided they were right. There had always been a side to me that wanted more than 2.4 children and a mortgage. I hadn't had the courage to try before, but now I had nothing to lose. Suddenly I had a new lease of life. I decided to go back to school. I applied for several courses and was accepted to study Media Production at my local college.I was having the time of my life. I dyed my hair, pierced my belly-button and I got a part-time job for a PR company as well as acting as DJ at local house parties.Rob and I never fell out over his decision not to get married. In fact we are still great mates and go out partying together at least once a month.
