Female Protein Powders - How To Decide Which One Is For You

Many women these days are starting to use protein powders as part of a weight loss

or muscle building routine...so much so that many of the big supplement companies are producing "female protein powders" designed especially for women's bodies.

All of this new choice has meant that for most women who don't have a degree in sports science and nutrition, walking into their local health food store to choose a good protein powder can be very intimidating.

Which protein is right for your body? Will these protein shakes make you fat? Can you use "men's" protein shakes or do you have to stick with the female powders?

These are just some of the questions that go through a lady's mind when choosing a protein shake. In this article I'm going to give you some answers to these questions and hopefully help you to make a more informed choice the next time you are out shopping for protein.

Which Protein Is Right For Your Body?

This is really the most important question since the female protein powder that you choose will heavily depend on what your current goals are for your body type.

In other words, are you looking to gain muscle or lose weight?

An ideal female protein powder for a weight loss diet is one that is low in fats, calories and sugars, high in phosphate compounds and a good balance of protein and carbohydrates. These factors all serve to keep your metabolism high and consistent, and avoid any spikes and crashes that can cause you to feel suddenly hungry or desire unhealthy snacks.

On the other hand, for muscle building, an ideal female protein powder is one that is high in calories, with a high protein percentage (80-90%) and a good amount of good fats such as medium chain tri-glycerides which are handled by the body much faster than standard fats.

Will Protein Shakes Make You Fat?

At the end of the day, protein is protein, whether it comes in the form of a big red juicy steak or a convenient protein shake. Your body uses the protein that it needs and then flushes the rest out.

The key point to this question is not really whether protein makes you fat, but the powders themselves.

The actual fat content in protein powders is pretty small so it is unlikely that you will get fat from using them. So-called "weight gainers" will contain more fat and fillers, and for this reason I don't recommend you use them as they may make you gain unhealthy weight.

But your standard powders, like Whey, contain around 80-90% protein and not much else.

Gaining fat is really down to having a caloric surplus, i.e. you are consuming more calories than you are burning off, and this results in excess fat deposits.

Therefore, be vigilant about your calorie intake and use female protein powders to "supplement" where you feel you are lacking. Protein powders are not a crutch for a poor diet...eat well and just use a protein shake for convenience when appropriate.

Can You Use "Men's" Protein Shakes?

Well, let's just clear something up...there is no such thing as protein for men and protein for women. Protein is protein, just as carbs are carbs and fats are fats.

Therefore women can absolutely use "men's" proteins - because simply they aren't really "men's" proteins...they're just marketed that way. Let's be honest, the supplement companies would love to sell different protein powders for men, women, household pets and every different age group under the sun ;) That's how they increase their market share.

All you have to keep in mind is that most protein powders can be used with equal success by men and women alike - in fact most tubs these days provide different serving suggestions for men and women so you'll know exactly what you should be using.

The only difference between standard protein powders and those specifically designed for women, are that the women 's ones contain a few extra ingredients that the ladies need like Vitamin B6 and Folic Acid. Other than that they are more or less the same.
