Fat Loss Don'ts: Crash Diets
Crash dieting is a broad term usually applied to a severe restriction of calorie consumption with a view to losing weight very rapidly
. Most people are aware that crash diets don't work in the long-term and this is because short-term weight loss and long-term
Fat loss are completely different things.
What happens when we crash diet?
Put simply, the body goes into what is called "metabolic shutdown" in order to conserve energy. This is an evolutionary adaptation developed to keep us alive during times of famine, as those who expended the least energy were the ones most likely to survive. However, metabolic shutdown means that the body becomes more efficient at storing incoming calories as fat so the body will have energy stores if food was ever short again.
When calorie intake is restricted to extreme levels a number of things happen to the body. Firstly, the hormones which cause feelings of hunger increase whereas those that make us feel full during and after meals decrease. Again, this is an evolutionary adaptation to make the body want to consume more food.
Furthermore, there is a reduction in the hormones responsible for raising metabolism; this causes metabolic rate to slow down in an effort to conserve energy.
Finally, the body starts to shut down calorifically expensive functions (those that require a lot of energy). This includes our immune system, which is why people often get ill when crash dieting.
The overall effect of these changes is to predispose the body to gather up calories and store them away as fat. This means that when normal food consumption resumes after a crash diet, fat is gained very rapidly. Weight lost during the diet is very quickly regained and it is not uncommon for people to actually end up heavier than they were before dieting.
In short, crash diets are not the route to healthy, sustained weight loss. Instead you should aim for a healthy, balanced diet combined with an exercise program which burns fat gradually and which you are able to maintain over long periods.
Meal replacement formulas such as Sci-MX
