When you are aiming for effective weight loss, it is not neccessary to take supplements, diet pills, or to buy an outlandish exercise tool. I've made a few notes on common mistakes, corrections and added tips.

Mistake: Starving yourself and missing out on meals to lose weight or excluding whole food groups on a fad diet. This will actually cause your metabolism to slow down and store what you do eat as fat in reserve for the next time you starve your body.

Correction: Eat regularly, up to 6 times per day, never go hungry. Have small portion controlled nutrition packed meals that supply your body with the energy you need depending upon your activity, size, sex, age and weight loss goals.

Added Tip: Start your day with a glass of water and have a glass of water before each meal. Often we mistake thirst for hunger and this is an easy way to ensure you drink enough water daily.

Mistake: Self diagnosing, or allowing sales people and marketers to tell you what supplements you need to be healthy. Most people tell you that you need supplements, pills or special diets to line their own pockets, they are not really interested in you personally.

Correction: Eat a balanced nutritious diet with plenty of fresh food, fresh fruits, vegetables, dairy, natural protein sources and fish are a good start. Discuss your diet with a professional, like your Doctor, Nutritionist or Naturopath and get unbiased advice about supplements.

Added Tip: Do your own research on nutrition, food sources and portion control before speaking to anyone. That way you will be able to prepare some questions that are important to you and be better able to judge if they are giving you valid information.

Mistake: Watching infommercials and believing their hype and self promotion. The daytime ads are targeted at SAHMs and people who don't get out much and are easy targets. As my five year old will tell you, "ads are designed to sell people things they don't really need."

Correction: These ads are carefully placed at selected times to target an audience who are either unable or unlikely to get out and exercise at the gym or play a sport. Their 'research' and 'results' are often manufactured sales gibberish.

Added Tip: Most of us either know someone or know of someone in the fitness industry, seek some advice from them. If not, join an online forum and get some real, unbiased feedback regarding fitness equipment you are considering buying.

Speak to Nutritionists, Naturopaths, Doctors and anyone else who can give you an educated, unbiased opinion. If ANYONE tries to sell you something and doesn't recommend you get professional advice or ask about your current supplements, medicines, treatments or injuires, they are shonky.
