Facial Recognition Technology
The software used in facial recognition technology is extremely sophisticated and can easily spot one person in a crowd of others
. What this software does is to pick out what are called the landmarks on the face. These landmarks are sometimes referred to as nodal points, and every face is considered to have about 80 of them. These nodal points will include the length and width of the nose, the shape and angle of the cheekbones, the depth of the eyes, the breadth of the forehead, as well as many other features.
Once in the computer, the nodal points will be analyzed and stored for present or future use. The specific part of the program that does this is called the recognition algorithms. These algorithms record and analyze the data given to provide a compressed facial composite. While useful to a great degree, this technique was found to experience difficulty recognizing faces that were partly hidden, or in shadow, or contorted at all. It was obvious that a better facial recognition technology had to be developed.
A much more sophisticated and accurate method of facial recognition technology is available with 3D Facial Recognition. Either a 2D image of a person can be used for this process or a 3D image taken from a video monitor. This method is so advanced that the subject can be turned 90 degrees from the camera and still provide enough of an image for the technology to use. As soon as the system has an image to work with, it begins to calculate the size, position, and angle of the head. Working with the measurements it has made, the facial recognition system will then make a template. In security or law enforcement, this template will be used for comparison.
As facial recognition technology has become more available, it is thought that it will also be used in banks and at ATMs. A voluntary program would be set up whereby facial recognition would take the place of other means of identification. It is even thought that large companies will use facial recognition technology to improve productivity and security, in part by preventing what is called buddy punching at the time clock.
When used to compare familial closeness, facial recognition technology will be able to more accurately detect similarities based on its 3D capabilities than would be possible by the human eye. It is for this reason that websites that deal with genealogy will often use this technique to link even distant family members, or even ancestors, to the rest of the family. Using
facial recognition technology to build a family tree and unite families more closely is probably one of the best ways in which to use this advanced process.
