. It can get pretty embarrassing. However, if you are one of the people who suffer from excessive sweating, you have to know that you are not at all alone, and there are in fact, millions of people affected by the same condition.
The thing is, everybody needs to sweat to maintain internal temperature. Sweating or perspiration is in turn regulated by the sympathetic nerve trunk which is located in the chest area. Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which the sweat glands, which is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system, work far more than what is necessary. One can experience palmar (palm), plantar (foot), armpit, or facial hyperhidrosis.
Note that hyperhidrosis isn't likely to be completely cured without surgery, but it can be drastically controlled. Before you undergo treatment, you have to understand what the root cause of your problem is. You can do this by visiting a dermatologist who will start a diagnostic process. Your family history will be analyzed, as it can be hereditary. Then underlying conditions such as hyperthyroidism and diabetes should be taken into consideration. Blood tests need to be carried out to rule out underlying medical conditions as root cause. After examination and observation, the doctor should carry out a test to determine the extent of hyperhidrosis. This way, the doctor will know which type of treatment you should be recommended for.
There are numerous ways for your facial hyperhidrosis to be controlled and the sweating to be reduced. First, you can try topical anti-perspirants such as those with aluminum chloride. You might need this in higher concentrations, in which case, the doctor can prescribe one for you. In cases when hyperhidrosis occurs not jus tin the face but in other areas as well, anti-cholinergics might work. However, these drugs have side effects such as drowsiness, and dryness in the mouth. If your excessive facial sweating is often triggered by social anxiety, taking anti-depressant might be recommended.
If these don't work, as in severe cases, your doctor might recommend Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections. It is rather expensive though and that you need to redo the process every 9 months or so. Botox injections disable sweat glands in the area treated. This is only highly effective when the sweat comes from a limited area though. You also need to redo the process every 9 months or so.
One rather controversial treatment is the ETS or Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy where portions of the sympathetic nervous system are destroyed. It is highly effective for people who've had problems with sweaty palms. However, with facial hyperhidrosis, success rates aren't the same. Keep in mind that when you do this, you prevented heat regulation in that particular part, so you might be in for some compensatory sweating - sweating someplace.
Considering that around 3% of the world's population suffers from hyperhidrosis, it's not surprising that not only are there people who want to get rid of sweaty palms and faces for good -- there are a lot of people involved in finding and creating a solution.
