Actress Catherine Zeta Jones's promise to the accomplished actor Michael Douglas was sealed with a 10 carat antique diamond estimated at about $2 million. Those were the royal vows which were taken exchanging those fairy tales wedding rings.
From traditional point of view this circular band around your ring finger is still an unsolved mystery over the years across continents and historic periods. According to various customs and rituals this ceremony of exchanging ring while taking the vow remains the same. The picture might be different but the main theme remains the same defying differences of customs and rituals of countries.
Evolution of everything has been experienced by long generations but the tradition never fails. Wearing of this jewelry has been changed, the materials used in the rings are changed, the design and shape have been changed but the main purpose remains always the same. During the reign of George I of England, wedding rings were often worn on thumbs even though they were placed on the third finger during the wearing ceremony. Now it is worn in the forth finger every where in the world. This tradition stated because it was believed that a vein ran from the ring finger directly to the heart so it automatically links to our love and that is why wearing wedding ring in this finger will bear most happiness and love. Wearing wedding ring in this finger will bear extreme happiness and rain love in the couples married life. It was the belief of that era. But this practice, in medieval times, continued for a different reason. During a religious wedding ceremony the groom would place the ring on the bride's left thumb, index and middle finger in turn and saying "in the name of the father, son and Holy Ghost. The ring was then placed fully on the next finger, the third. It was then made official and formal in the Book of Common Prayer where the marriage' rituals and words are written down.
But medical scientists have said all this false and baseless. There is no such truth behind this matter. Now some couples have started to wear their ring in their right hands.
In materials the changes are very clear and prominent. Over a period of time, precious metals such as silver and gold were put into service as the metal of choice for the wedding ring - the blending of these two metals signified the union of strength and beauty. But now gold and platinum are used vastly for making wedding rings.
