In the United States we're known for having an obesity epidemic. And we're know for our cars. Is there a connection? But of course.

People in other countries, such as the countries that make up Europe are generally known to be slimmer than the average American. They also are known for walking more. Is there a connection? Why yes.

So what could Americans who want to lose weight learn from Europeans? Drive less, walk more, and you won't be so fat. It's Europe's #1 weight loss secret.

In the U.S. it's gotten so bad that people drive to go to the store that's just around the corner. They drive even when they have time to walk. They drive when the weather is beautiful and warm. They drive from parking spot to parking spot, parking as close as possible to the doorof the next destination so as to minimize the extra 10 seconds that would otherwise be spent walking.

The reason for all this is time. Americans are time-poor, working more than anyone else in the world, with so many demands every day that if something needs to happen it must always be done in the most efficient way. Usually this means getting somewhere and back as quickly as possible, and a car is the fastest way in almost every case.

However, there are some Americans who've taken up the lost art of walking. Usually you can see them in headbands and heart rate monitors, moving with a strange frenetic stride, pumping their arms, hooked into an ipod rhythm as they intensely move forward toward some unseen goal. The joy of strolling is completely lost. Walking, to such industrious souls, is one more thing to do as fast and efficiently as possible.

I'm all about fast and efficient, but there's something to be said for a late-evening stroll to the grocery store to buy some smoothie fruit, or a morning walk to a friend's house for a breakfast chat.

Instead of filling up your schedule so the only way you can get things done is to travel 30-60 miles per hour between every new destination, why not walk? Plan less activities, and batch your errands so you do things on the same side of town in the same afternoon. Focus on how relaxing it is to feel your feet on the ground. Walk to work if you can. Walk whenever the opportunity rises. If you make a habit of this you might find you're getting all the exercise you need to keep your body slim. And when you go on that trip to Europe you'll fit in ever so much better.
