Erasing Facial Lines And Wrinkles
Neuromodulator injections are the most commonly performed non surgical facial rejuvenation procedure in the United States
. Not far behind are dermal filler injections of various sorts. Both of these medications can provide excellent facial rejuvenation without the need for surgery or other down time producing procedures.
Dermal fillers are a class of medications which are used to fill lines and wrinkles of the face. Each has different indications but there is currently only one available in the United States which is permanent. The first temporary dermal fillers were made of bovine collagen. They required skin testing in advance of their use and only lasted about three months. The next iteration was the use of hyaluronic acid based fillers. These did not require skin testing and generally lasted about 6 months, though one has an indication to say that a single application can last up to a year. Small microspherules of bone was next on the market, lasting about a year. The most recent introduction in the temporary dermal fillers is porcine collagen. It does not require skin testing and lasts up to a year.
Dermal fillers have been used since the 1980s with great success. The high safety profile and versatility have proven very useful in many applications. Some physicians have even used dermal fillers as an alternative to more invasive surgical procedures for both nonsurgical rhinoplasty and non-surgical facelift procedures.
For wrinkles produced with muscle motion, the neuromodulators will help. The neuromodulators currently on the market in the United States are based on various formulations of botulinum toxin, the toxin responsible for botulism. It causes temporary muscle paralysis. While providing excellent results for motion wrinkles, the neuromodulators can also help with some resting wrinkles as some muscles have a constant motion causing fine lines and wrinkles.
There are risks with any medical treatment and these non invasive facial rejuvenation procedures are no different. It is imperative to seek out an experienced and trained physician when considering either neuromodulators or dermal fillers. While adverse reactions are rare, they do occur and having an experienced physician close at hand can be life saving.
