Eating When Stressed: Can It Slow Down Weight Loss
?
Emotions can have many effects on the way we approach our diet. Most of us at some time have felt the need to eat when we are feeling depressed, upset or angry. Although initially we feel a certain amount of comfort and satisfaction when we over eat, we inevitably feel bad afterwards. There are many reasons why we should avoid over-eating when we are stressed, angry or upset about any negative emotions that we are feeling:
1) - We are likely to eat much more than we need.
Increased stress levels can create a desire for comfort, and many of us opt for trying to suppress our anger or sadness by eating much more food than our body needs. While our emotions are in turmoil, we are unaware of our body telling us that we are full and do not want to eat any more. We just continue eating without taking into consideration the effect it is having on our stomach and digestive system until adverse effects occur.
2) - We may have a feeling of nausea.
If we are stressed or upset without eating our stomach will let us know by causing cramps or churning and a feeling of tightness, giving rise to a feeling of nausea. Eating whilst our stomach feels like this is best avoided. Over eating in one sitting can also be a contributory factor to a feeling of nausea.
3) - We may lose the will to succeed.
Negativity often creeps in when we are feeling under pressure and stressed. How many of us are guilty of neglecting our diet, and lose the will power to follow through to our weight loss goal? Our unhappiness and anger seems a more important issue than our diet at the time. Sadly this mental and emotional rollercoaster can have such a detrimental effect that we often just feel the need to eat anything and everything that we can, at whatever cost to our diet.
4) - We may lose our self-esteem.
We know that overeating is detrimental to our diet and once we have eaten more than we really wanted to, we will be overcome by feelings of anger, sadness and frustration that we have neglected our diet. This will bring about feelings of weakness and will make us question our behaviour. It can also lead to a loss of self-confidence, which can result in us feeling much worse.
Ideally we should try to avoid eating altogether when we stressed or in an emotional turmoil. The best approach, even when really hungry, is trying suppress the desire to eat until we have controlled our emotions. We should try to spend a little time taking slow deep breaths to help us calm down and relax.
Once we feel more relaxed and in control of our emotions, we can proceed and enjoy our meal or snack without feeling the need to overeat. Of course we have to block out the issues which affected our emotions initially, at least for the moment while we are enjoying our food. We can review the issues later if we feel that we need to, but focusing on what we are eating at the moment has to take priority.
Being an emotional eater can be over come with practice and patience. Once we have mastered control of our emotions and stress levels, we will have more control of our diet, leading to a healthy weight loss and also gain the ability to maintain our healthy weight once our goal has been achieved.
