Drugs And The Mental And Physical Addictions They Create
No matter what type of drugs you happen to be addicted to
, the process of quitting is a difficult one. Compared to some drugs, quitting cigarettes is a walk in the park.
The first step to quitting any type of drugs is to realize that you actually have a problem. There isn't anyone who can make the decision for you; not your wife, not your kids, not your parents, not anyone and the worst thing that you can do is convince yourself that you can handle the addiction simply by cutting down how much you're using. The issue is the fact that most drug addictions are caused by either not wanting to face reality and having an emotional addiction to a substance or having a straight physical addiction.
Despite rumors to the contrary, you cannot be physically addicted to marijuana. You can, however, be emotionally and psychologically addicted to it and use it as an escape route to avoid day to day responsibilities such as going to work or taking care of family members. With marijuana, cutting down use gradually and making yourself realize that you do not need the drug to get through life is key because the addiction is a mental one. Keeping busy and not allowing yourself to sit idle and think about it is also important because it doesn't allow you to dwell on wanting the drug.
If you are addicted to a harder drug, like cocaine, heroin, or methamphetamine, you will need to seek professional help, especially in the case of meth. You will need to have yourself weaned off of some hard drugs because your body will go through withdrawals, which can be painful in varying degrees, depending on the drug. Going to a rehabilitation center is going to be your best bet to get off of these drugs and completing the program could take weeks or months, depending on the severity of the addiction.
Prescription drugs are often the easiest to obtain, especially if you have a family member who has been recently prescribed pain killers or nerve pills. Oxycontin is one of the most abused prescription drugs out there and it can be very physically and mentally addictive and addiction most often results from being prescribed the drug for chronic pain.
In this situation, the person who has developed the addiction believes that they are not the same as the person who gets their drugs off the street because they are prescribed them by a licensed physician, but the truth is that addiction is addiction no matter who the supplier is. Due to the nature of addiction to prescription drugs like Oxycontin, the best choice is to go to a rehabilitation center and after you are completely detoxed, treatment in a home setting will follow. Cravings can still continue even during this time, however, and help at home will be indispensible.
