Visit a Winter Wilderness
One of the most popular reasons to visit Alaska in the winter is to see the northern lights, but there are plenty of other things to see and do. The daylight hours are shorter at this time of year but this means long twilight hours and very pretty extended sunsets.
Head up north to Fairbanks for the best place to see the northern lights and spend a few days exploring the area. Visit Creamer's Field Waterfowl Refuge to see some migratory birds - grosbeaks and redpolls are more often seen in the winter months. Spend a day on the slopes at one of the many resorts in the area, such as Birch Hill which hosts the US Ski Team, or take a tour even further north to visit Eskimo settlements or try your hand at ice fishing.

Go dog-sledding through the forests or travel under your own steam on foot or in canoes up one of the many rivers, taking in some white water along the way. Visit old mines and pan for gold or take a tramline ride over the rainforest to Mount Roberts and visit the Mountain House with its amazing views across to the Gastineau and the chance to see native artists working.

You can visit the kennels of sled dogs and meet champion dogs who will take you on a high-speed tour of the forests. You can cuddle the puppies, learn about how they are trained and hear from the Iditarod racers what it is like to take part in this 1150-mile race.
To see the less sociable of Alaska's wildlife take a helicopter or plane ride out into the wilderness for a glimpse of humpback and killer whales in the fjords and bears out in Katmai National Park. At the beginning of July you can watch the bears catching the salmon as they swim upstream at Brook Falls.
Kenai Fjords National Park has a wealth of sea life among its glaciers. Sea otters, puffins, harbour seals and sea lions all play in the waters of the fjords, along with the whales and porpoises.
Alaska provides one of the greatest outdoor adventures. Whether you visit in the winter with an eye out for the northern lights or in the summer to try your hand at a multitude of activities, you are sure to have an experience unlike any other.
