Diabetic Skin Care & Problem Prevention
For anyone who is diabetic skin care is a subject that will have come up time and time again
. It s a subject which is more relevant to those with diabetes than most, because of the way the illness affects the skin. Essentially, the high levels of blood glucose mean that fluid is easily lost from the body, especially the skin. This leads to visible problems such as dry skin, most commonly seen on feet, legs and elbows, and even cracked skin which can lead to further problems such as infections. The reduced nerve sensitivity and decreased blood flow to the extremities also makes it more difficult to identify problems.
Diabetic skin care is therefore best looked upon as a preventative measure, where it is far easier to stop a problem occurring in the first place than it is to treat it afterwards. There are several ways in which diabetic skin care can be carried out, with some of the most effective methods listed below:
Wear cotton clothing especially underwear. This material works best because it is light and allows air to move easily round the body, and does not irritate dry skin like many other materials
Drink plenty of fluids. This will help maintain the correct levels of fluid in your body, and in turn will help keep skin moist. When it is moist, skin is not only less likely to become irritated but it will also not dry out and crack.
Use a mild soap. Plenty of people find that their skin improves just by using a milder soap than they did before. This is because some of the stronger varieties can actually remove the natural protective barrier that moist skin has, drying it out and making it more prone to cracking
After washing, make sure you dry properly. Take particular care in places where skin comes together and water can be trapped, such as under arms or between fingers and toes.
After you are properly dry, you might want to think about applying a moisturizer. A lotion like this can help keep your skin flexible and prevent it from drying out, but you should take care to use one that soaks right in and doesn't leave a barrier that might prevent your skin from breathing.
If you need further advice on diabetic skin care, then you should contact your healthcare provider.
