A big lifestyle change, that many are embracing, is the detoxifying diet or cleanse. More and more people are following different cleansing plans to lose weight, feel healthier and get rid of toxins in the body.

You already know, that the average diet in North America is full of fast food. We fill our bodies with grease, preservatives, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and other chemicals that we know can't be good for us.

A "detox" sounds like a great way to help. And it might be, provided you are careful and follow some simple preparation.

The first step is discussing it with your physician. You need to discuss your personal health situation before you embark on any new diet. With this type of diet, it is even more critical.

The first thing you need to be aware of is the potential side effects. When your body is being cleansed of unwanted chemicals, it is going to go through a type of withdrawal.

This is going to be especially prevalent with actual drugs like caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. You may experience headaches, or other symptoms of withdrawal, so it is advisable to slowly cut down on your caffeine. Not quit it all at once.

In addition, some people will experience diarrhea or constipation. Depending on their health, and existing lifestyle and food choices.

Finally, many people undergoing a detox diet experience hunger, a bad mood (no wonder, if you are hungry), and being tired. These are going to be partially due to some of the nutrients that you are lacking.

If your doctor approves, and you are "ok" in the knowledge that you might experience some side effects, you should take some time to prepare. In fact, adequate preparation will go a long way towards avoiding the side effects listed above.

First of all, reduce the amounts of toxins that you are taking into your body. This will help you adjust, and begin detoxify you before you even begin your diet. Eliminate, or at least reduce caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and sugars at least 1 week in advance. Begin drinking lots of water, and get lots of rest.

You should also be exercising at least 20 minutes per day. Your body is going to be going through a big change, and it needs to be prepared for it.

Finally, purchase the fruits, vegetables and supplements, based on your chosen plan. Ideally these will replace the nutrients you are losing, but not increase the toxins you are trying to get rid of.

Talking to your doctor, knowing what to expect, and preparing your body will set you up so your detoxification is as successful and painless as possible.

Many people do not take the time to adequately prepare, and the detox period is extremely unpleasant.

If you feel that your body needs to be detoxified, research legitimate plans and talk to your doctor. Remember to only follow these diets 1 or 2 times per year, since they do deprive your body of nutrients and can be unhealthy if followed any more than that.

Detoxify Diets will probably not help you reduce your weight on their own. Other than maybe some loss in water weight. But, they can be an excellent way to promote a healthy body, and also as preparation for a healthy weight loss diet.
