Dementia, Hand Guns And Your Family - A Recipe For Disaster

Do you find yourself taking care of a loved one who now suffers from dementia

? Although it's very difficult, there are some things you should do to protect them from themselves and to make sure that they don't inadvertently hurt any members of your family.

Dementia can cause adults to act as if they were anywhere from two to twelve years of age because dementia reduces our cognitive abilities.

Although Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, there are other forms as well, such as Parkinson's disease, Pick's disease and mini-strokes.

The judgment of a person who has dementia may have decreased or pretty much vanished altogether. There's a good chance that they will misplace things. And their personality, moods, and behavior may change. They can become disoriented in place and time. They can encounter challenges performing familiar tasks. They may lose their memory, and more.

Because of these reasons, if you're about to care of someone suffering from dementia, you will have to "child proof" your home. The first thing you should do is remove any potentially toxic household products and cleaning supplies. Either throw these supplies out or put a lock on the cabinet you store them in.

Then, use the Internet to search for other products, such as some herbs, such as sage, that can harmed anyone who might eat a lot of it. It's amazing how many seemingly benign substances can have such negative effects. Get rid of them or put them behind a locked door, too.

And make sure to keep all of your power tools locked up. Your parents might have used power tools for their whole life but even if they used them every day, they can now harm themselves or others with these same tools because of their diminished capacities.

Since children tend to put things in their mouths, and a dementia sufferer is very child like, you'll also want to fence off all the toxic plants in your yard such as poinsettias and philodendrons. And while you're at it, why not put a fence around your roses as well? This way no one will be scratched by the thorns if they fall into a rose bush?

And if you have a spa, pool, fountain or stream on your property you should fence that off too. Naturally you'll want to lock up anything that's sharp, hide the car keys, and cap off your electrical outlets.

Essentially, if you can think like a child and imagine what trouble you might get into when you look around your home and yard you should see what areas you should concentrate on.

Dementia presents a special problem if you own firearms and keep them in home. If you can picture the potential dangers of having a child find your hand gun and ammunition you can see the terrible possibilities of what might happen if a dementia patient has access to them.

If you don't already own a gun safe, it's one of the first things you should purchase. There are many reputable companies online that sell high-quality gun safes at very affordable prices.
