Dealing With Loneliness In Women
Loneliness in women is a very real concern, and if left unchecked
, the person affected can quickly spiral down into a cycle of depression from which it could take many years to recover. Although the link between women and loneliness is not a gender exclusive one, women tend to express their loneliness more openly and more readily than men.
All of us are at risk for being lonely of course, and it can creep up unexpectedly or at certain times of the year. Women can feel particularly lonely during holidays and around their birthday, and the sense of isolation that is felt can be pretty devastating.
There are many ways to deal with loneliness in women, but nearly all of them will require making some significant lifestyle or habit changes. For many women, loneliness relief will also require "letting their guard down" so to speak, and perhaps a relaxing of normally stringent standards for socialization. This doesn't mean to say that loneliness in women should be solved by changing who you are, but rather being more open to new ideas and social settings, and perhaps being less judgmental of people.
On the other hand, society in general can be pretty judgmental with regard to women and loneliness. Many people are quick to judge a single woman as lonely, even if she lives a happy and fulfilling life in relative solitude. Not everyone who is alone is lonely, and it is important to make a distinction between women who choose to be alone and those who are alone without any real choice in the matter.
For women who are lonely and wish to get out of the never-ending spiral of despair and depression, the most common advice would be to seek out the company of friends and family. This can actually work wonders in dealing with loneliness in women, and you might find that the occasional chat with an old friend or even a quick phone call or email can lift your spirits to a significant degree.
You might also want to consider devoting more of your time to worthy pursuits instead of focusing on your own loneliness. Loneliness in women is often caused by boredom, and getting started on a new hobby or interest can be the best thing you can do to keep loneliness at bay. Consider taking up photography, gardening, or playing a musical instrument. You never know of what will start out as a way to deal with loneliness in women ends up opening a new career path for you!
Unfortunately, not all cases of loneliness in women can be solved by "going out more" or taking up a new hobby. In some women, loneliness can be so severe that all interest in outside activity or social contact is lost. Some may even fall into a deep and prolonged spell of depression, and possibly even entertain thoughts of suicide. In such women, loneliness issues will have to be addressed with professional counseling in order to prevent further emotional and metal trauma, and risk to physical health.
