Cover And Concealment: Shotgun Safety And Defense
Learning the ways of shotgun safety and defense is only half the battle when it comes
to getting a proper education; learning the important aspects of cover and concealment will help you survive when you are on the defensive end of an altercation, should one ever occur. A person can be the most excellent marksman on the planet, but if they are completely leaving themselves exposed they are as good as dead....and often end up that way.
We never know when an attack might occur. The days of being able to leave your doors unlocked are gone, and although it is a shame that we can not feel safe in our own homes, it is a fact of life in many areas these days. Many people today agree that it is smart to keep a defense shotgun handy, but it is only smart if the owner knows how to properly use it and protect himself too. Generally speaking, concealment refers to getting behind something to hide with. Concealment involves getting behind something that does not necessarily stop shots that are fired but does not make you an open target, either. A wall, doorway, a living room sofa or something similar might be objects that will hide you but won't stop an incoming bullet. If you have a moment to pick and choose your concealment, don't pick something like a lightweight particleboard end table unless you have no other options!
Cover is just what it sounds like. Cover involves something you can get behind like a washing machine, a dryer, a refrigerator, or a car that you can not only hide behind but will also be protected with. Cover is using big, heavy objects that will stop or deflect incoming bullets away from you. Even a heavy mattress does a pretty good job with this, providing reasonable cover. Brick walls, trees, and buildings offer some protection out doors. You always want to put something thick and strong between you and the assailant.
Aside from cover and concealment, as you can imagine there are more attributes that come along with being integrated with shotgun safety and defense. Being able to shoot accurately at a target is one thing, but then again so is being able to shoot at a moving target. Other things you can do to supplement your practice in shotgun safety and defense is to practice in-home intruder drills with the firearm empty for safety.
