Everything they did, from washing dishes, to washing clothes, to going shopping, to traveling, required a lot more physical power than it does now. Therefore people didn't need to go the gym, because every day's activity required as much exertion as one trip to the gym.
So these days if we want to curb obesity, we need to remember that older lifestyle of daily exertion. One cannot expect to live a healthy life exercising once a week. This is not one of the ways to lose weight fast.
Furthermore when we do begin to exercise, we must be aware that our entire body needs to experience some kind of motion. Doing a few push-ups is great, but we need to remember that in this day and age, many muscles and joints never experience any type of work, and thus they are weakened.
It is the same concept as a an astronaut who goes up into space for a month and never uses his muscles because he is floating around the whole time. Then he gets back to earth and can barely walk.
