Considerations For Breast Augmentation

If you're considering breast augmentation

, there are several factors to consider. Your doctor will discuss the various types of implants as well as their effect on your silhouette. Together you'll choose the right material, size, and shape. Besides these aesthetic considerations, you'll need to think ahead about possible ramifications in the future:

Implants Don't Prevent Sagging

Even though your breasts may be nice and firm after the procedure, implants will not prevent your breasts from sagging as you age or after nursing a baby. You may still need to be prepared to have them lifted later on.

No Lifetime Guarantee

For many reasons, breast augmentation may have to be redone as one time or another during your life. Weight gain, weight loss, having a baby or breastfeeding may change the shape of your breasts, and make another surgery necessary. Your implants may also need to be replaced if they rupture.

Mammogram Complications

Implants can complicate mammograms, blocking tissue from being seen, so if you have them, be sure to let your technician know. That way, they'll be more thorough in examining the surrounding tissue.

Routine MRI Exams May Be Required

If you opt for silicone implants, it's very important to monitor for signs of rupture. Silicone can be toxic to your body and cause problems as it's absorbed. For this reason, you may need to have an MRI exam done every three years or so to ensure that the implant is still intact. Because they are filled with firm, gel-like substance, it's hard to tell if they've ruptured unless an MRI is done.

Implants May Cause Breastfeeding Problems

For those who plan to breastfeed in the future, breast augmentation may not be the best option. Your surgeon will be able to give you some options that will be more prone to allow breastfeeding later on. Be sure to let him know of your future plans as you discuss the type of implant you'd like the use and the way they are to be inserted.

Insurance Issues

Since this type of procedure is not typically necessary, you may not be able to count on coverage from your insurance company. In cases where a mastectomy has been done for medical reasons such as cancer, your insurance may cover part or all of the procedure. However, if it is solely for aesthetic reasons, you shouldn't count on insurance coverage.

Possibility of Additional Surgery for Removal

If a problem arises and surgery is needed, you may be able to have a second procedure at little or no cost to you. However, if you simply don't like the results of the breast augmentation, it will be your responsibility to pay for surgery to have them removed.

Thinking Ahead Before Surgery

Breast augmentation is not something to be done on a whim. You'll need to think through all the ramifications and thoroughly consult with your surgeon about your wishes for the results of the procedure. And then, enjoy your new physique!
