Common Pregnancy Complications

Complication during pregnancy is more common than most people think

. Even for those who are healthy and have had children before, early pregnancy complications could arise, at no fault to anyone. This article explains some of these complications and what to watch out for.

A normal pregnancy usually stretches over 40 weeks. Pregnancy complication arises, if delivery happens before 37 weeks. This occurs when the foetus membrane ruptures untimely. Premature rupture of membrane (PROM) is the most common cause of premature birth and happens in about 10-20% pregnancies worldwide. Studies indicate that while vaginal infection, improper diet, etc., increase PROM risk, the deficiency of Vitamin C is a major contributor.

Ectopic pregnancy is a one of the most dangerous pregnancy complications, which happens when an egg attaches itself in an area other than the uterus. Most of the ectopic pregnancies occur in the fallopian tube. This is a very problematic form of fertility and is common in women who get pregnant at a later age, have had an ectopic pregnancy before, or have had numerous abortions

One other risk during pregnancy in older women is the effect that disease conditions of the heart, kidney, or diabetes and hypertension have on the health of the pregnant women. The chances of still birth also increase with age as does the need for a C-section.

Preeclampsia arises due to high blood pressure and results in significant swelling in the hands and the feet. This type of complication needs to be taken care of properly or it may result in the death of the mother or the baby. The only solution to resolve this complication is to deliver the baby, even if it is premature.

As a precaution, pregnant women are advised to do their best not to contract any inflammatory bowel disease during their conception months. That is because women who develop the disease while pregnant are more likely to experience and develop the described and mentioned complications than those women who already have the inflammatory bowel disease prior to pregnancy.

It is common to retain a little fluid. Legs tend to swell if a pregnant mom is on her feet all day long. The swelling should go down once she sits down and elevates her feet.A simple test to see if you are retaining fluid is to take the tips of your fingers and press them into the skin on the shin. Press hard enough that the fingers push into the skin but not so hard as to bruise or cut the skin.

The fact is that there are many older moms who have successfully given birth to healthy babies. If you are considering pregnancy in forties, thirties, fifties, you need to follow a healthy lifestyle from the pre-pregnancy days. Avoid smoking, drinking and drugs. Eat nutritious meals at regular intervals and do mild exercise as per the advice of your health care practitioner. Include supplements of vitamins especially folic acid before and during pregnancy as it is said to reduce the risk of birth defects in babies.
