The European debt crisis is once again making news

. The Olympics have overshadowed a lot of the financial news in July and early August but as summertime begins to fade so will the lack of attention. As Wall Street analyst and traders return their focus to the markets and not the beach we will most certainly return our attention to the crisis. July and August are historically lower volume trading months as many traders take time off. As they return and begin to focus on economic data we are to see higher volume and volatility in many futures markets.

Greece is returning to the spotlight as Prime Minister Antonis Samaras begins his trip to meet with other Euro zone leaders. The purpose of the trip will be to request an extension on the time allowed for Greece to achieve a balanced budget. If Greece is denied their request for more time it may have devastating effects all across Europe and will definitely have an effect on U.S markets. Spain is also stepping into the spotlight as they are expected to request a bailout from the European Central Bank. The European Central bank knows that it will need to provide assistance to Spain but will have to negotiate the terms and get Spain to agree to the conditions of the bailout. How can investors in the U.S prepare for more crippling news from Europe and protect their investment portfolio.

In time of economic uncertainty investors need to make sure they have a well-diversified portfolio. Harry Markowitz was the mind behind the development of the Nobel Prize winning mathematical theory. The theory introduces the idea that an investment portfolio should have exposure to more than one asset class. Even though a portfolio may be diversified in one or two different asset classes like stocks and bonds it is not enough. The price of stocks even though they may be of many different sectors does have a direct correlation. For instance in 2008 the whole market was affected. Modern Portfolio Theory explains that an investment portfolio needs alternative asset classes that are not correlated so that when the entire stock market is affected it does not have a devastating effect on a portfolio. To optimize returns and lower volatility in a portfolio an investor should gain exposure to asset classes such as the futures market.

To gain exposure to the futures market an investor can choose from a number of different commodity trading companies. Commodity trading companies allow for investors of all different experience levels in the futures market to gain access to a non-correlated asset class. An investor can choose a commodity strategy or futures strategy that based on their risk tolerance and the market exposure they desire. Every futures strategy can be used for each commodity strategy so investors are not limited to which strategy they choose based on the risk they would like to take. By adding managed futures to a portfolio an investor can diversify and have the satisfaction that a professional money manager is handling their account. Managed futures are the fastest growing asset class and used by both institutional and retail investors. These accounts do have minimums based on the program they choose which has a specific strategy and market they are required to trade, which is of their choosing.
