Choosing bridesmaid's dresses that compliment your wedding colour scheme

Summer is often the most popular time for weddings in the UK, thanks to the longer daylight hours and generally warmer weather the season brings. But no matter what time of year a wedding is held, the problems that are associated with planning the event are often the same: from making sure the bride has the perfect dress to getting the right caterers. There is, however, one unique way in which summer and winter weddings differ and that's in choosing a colour scheme.

Each wedding usually has a distinct colour scheme that informs its decorations and table settings. The cue for a colour scheme can be taken from a range of sources. For example, if the bride's favourite colour is blue, this may dictate the wedding's general colour scheme. Alternatively, if the couple insist on having red roses as their table settings, shades of red may dominate the proceedings. It is important, however, to alter the colour schemes between seasons. An autumn or winter wedding should concentrate on deeper shades like burgundy, gold, dark green or dark purple, while spring and summer weddings are more suited to lighter shades like pastel blue, coral, lilac, silver and apple green.

It's also important to remember that a wedding colour scheme should not only be confined to decorations. Ensuring that bridesmaid's dresses reflect the chosen colour theme will make the event a more stylish and sophisticated affair - particularly if there is more than one bridesmaid at the wedding. This doesn't necessarily mean that each bridesmaid will be wearing the same dress. Indeed, the actual style of their dresses should be different in order to suit the unique body shape of each girl. But the colour and material of each dress should match in order to adhere to the chosen colour scheme of the wedding.

If you haven't yet chosen a colour scheme for your wedding or you don't have any strong feelings on which colour would best suit the event, it might be a good idea to start by choosing a colour for your bridesmaid dresses. This way, you can decide on a colour that suits all your bridesmaids but doesn't clash with the surroundings of your chosen venue. For instance, think about the physical characteristics your bridesmaids have in common: if they all have blonde hair, avoid yellow-coloured dresses as this may make them look washed out. Instead, choose a simple pink or blue theme that will be both feminine and flattering.

If your wedding will also involve a number of groomsmen and ushers, consider including them in the colour scheme too. Female ushers may wear similar dresses to the bridesmaids, or be encouraged to adhere to the colour scheme if they are supplying their own dresses. Groomsmen and male ushers on the other hand are most likely to wear suits in grey or black, but their ties, bow ties or pocket hankerchiefs can easily be tailored to match the chosen wedding colour theme.
