Choosing The Right Office Chair For Healthcare Personel And Businesses

Share: Over the years I have designed many medical office furniture configurations to include
patient waiting rooms, reception, administration, and exam rooms.
For 2 decades I have worked as a vertical medical market representative, calling predominantly on hospitals, multi physician clinics, out patient centers, VA infirmaries, and State Department of Health facilities.
Calling on these centers requires a special expertise. Many of these facilities have special requirements and they need of a variety of specialty chairs.
Many different chairs are available for bigger and taller people, but few are aware these chairs exist. Some are referred to as big and tall chairs and some are referred to as bariatric chairs. They are available in a variety of styles to include benches, blood draw or phlebotomy, task seating, and tablet chairs.
Most of these chairs are made to support up to 500 pounds. These chairs are often employed in diabetic specialty clinics and outpatient centers.
Having these types of chairs available for larger patients is truly courteous and considerate. If you have ever watched a heavy patient try to force their larger frames into seating that was engineered by a modern furniture designer, you would know exactly what I mean.
There are a variety of models to choose from depending on the type of utilization planned for the chair. Many of todays cutting edge task chairs are available with heavy duty gas cylinders capable of supporting the additional weight of their larger users. They are designed for extended use. All day, every day if necessary, which is frequently the case.
Sometimes recliners make an excellent choice for dialysis clinics because the patients are required to be present and seated for hours at a time. Comfort is paramount in these areas. Some of these recliners are made with power assist to help the patient in and out of the chairs. Try to choose a recliner with the patient in mind. Try to put yourself in their shoes and imagine what it would be like to be them. Picture yourself getting in and out of a particular recliner or chair with their limitations and this can help you with selecting the appropriate chair for the job.
When choosing a recliner I like to add features that provide the user with the greatest degree of comfort and ergonomic amenities. I like to recommend recliners with storage underneath or a magazine rack attached to the side of the recliner. I also like to recommend ergonomic features such as a magazine or book holder that can be raised, lowered, or removed easily if necessary. Recliners are also available that offer IV poles for patients receiving intravenous fluids. Some models offer removable trays which support laptop notebooks, or facilitate drinks, snacks, or full meals.
Most medical seating is available with Krypton or heavy duty, soil proof, vinyl or fabric. This type of upholstery is an industry standard for most medical facilities. If a patient has an accident or if fluids are spilled onto these particular fabrics, they will not penetrate the fabric due to a special inner lining that is designed to protect the foam underneath.
If you are responsible for making specialty seating decisions, the best advice I could lend would be to recommend that you observe patients in the facility while they are being medically served. You will have a much better idea of what to recommend after identifying their specific needs. Empathy is key.
If you do not have the time to perform this type of on site survey, I would recommend that you hire someone with experience and outsource the project to them. Consultants are available to provide advise and specifications only they are called specifiers. You can negotiate the purchase of the items yourself using the specifiers recommendations.
Thank you in advance for your attendance and consideration of my articles.
