Pregnancy is a magical time in a woman's life

Pregnancy is a magical time in a woman's life. It is a time that is filled with many surprises, both good and bad. There are many symptoms of pregnancy that are shared by the majority of women; one of the most common is back pain. This particular symptom often causes issues throughout pregnancy. Often times it will seem as if nothing can be done to ease the pain, however, this isn't the case.

Backaches during pregnancy are generally caused by hormone changes, coupled with the weight shift which causes posture changes and muscle strains. While it may seem that these changes (and therefore the pain) are inevitable, they aren't. There are some tried and true home remedies that can be used to ease this pregnancy symptom.

First and foremost, remember that you are indeed pregnant. You may feel that you can handle lifting heavy or awkward objects. Don't. It is difficult during this stage of your life for your body to correctly compensate for both the abdominal shift and the sudden shift in weight of the object being picked up. This often results in muscle strain. Be sure to follow basic safety rules, squat down and pick up with your knees, not with your back.

When sleeping the body becomes very relaxed, this can cause awkward sleeping positions, resulting in back pain. When sleeping, it may help to have a firmer mattress. If needed, have someone put a board under your mattress for the temporary added support. Another sleeping tip; sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. This will help to correctly align your hips and back, generally a problem late in pregnancy.

Depending upon the stage of pregnancy, posture may be the source of your back pain. If standing for periods of time is required, it is a good idea to have something (such as a box or rail) to prop one foot at a time on. Being able to alternate the feet will help take pressure off of your lower back. If your job requires sitting, be sure to use good posture. A lower back pillow will provide needed support. Another good idea is to wear flat shoes as opposed to high heels, this is also good for balance in the later stages of pregnancy.

After a long day, it often helps to take a warm shower. Concentrate the water on the lower back area. If a shower isn't convenient for some reason, try a hot water bottle placed in the sore area. Often sore back muscles will respond well to the heat and massaging action of the shower.

In the later stages of pregnancy, it may seem that nothing can be done to ease the pain. If this is the case, especially if the pain also extends to the lower belly area, and it lasts more than an hour, contact your doctor. This type of back pain could actually be a sign of labor.
