Canon Digital Cameras- Very Humble Beginnings To Global Class Organization
The story starts in 1933 when three men launched the Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory in Japan
. Since then, the company has evolved into one of the largest manufacturers of electronic equipment on the planet. Now known as Canon, the business has gone from strength to strength, particularly in the digital camera sector where their reputation for quality merchandise at competitive prices is legendary. The road to riches however was not an easy one....
It all began with the phantom prototype camera known as 'Kwanon'. In those days, Germany was deemed to be the leader in camera manufacturing but their products were particularly expensive. So, Goro Yoshida, together with two others attempted to produce a 35mm rangefinder camera at a cheaper price and developed the "Kwanon'.
At this time, one of the difficulties faced by the company was that it did not have a lens of it's own. Thus, it made the decision to join with Nippon Kogaku Kogyo (who was to become the founder of Nikon) and obtain lenses from them. With the use of these lenses, Canon came up with its very first commercial camera known as the "Hansa Canon" in 1936, which became a smash hit. However, the organization still had to go through several challenges because of the War.
Once the war was over, the business had another dilemma. The lens, the camera and the company each had a different name so on 15th September 1947, the name Canon was taken to bring everything under one roof. From that moment on, the company started to slowly increase in size with some notable inventions such as the Serenar 50mm f/1.8 lens in 1951, the Canonet in 1961, the AF35M in 1979 and the EOS 650 in 1987.
Canon produced their very first digital camera in 1996, the Powershot 600. This was followed in 1998, thanks to new improvements in technology, by the launch of the EOS D2000 digital SLR camera designed for experts. In addition, the XL1 digital video camera was brought to the marketplace and with it a reputation for reliability and efficiency ensued, so much so, that it ended up being the official digital video camcorder for N.A.S.A.. This was a major coup for Canon.
Canon continued to pioneer efficiency, functionality and performance but with an affordable price tag. In 2002, they launched the EOS D60 and in 2003, the EOS 10D. Both these cameras made Canon the world leader in digital technology. Following these came the highly successful EOS Kiss Digital in 2003.
More recently, Canon has produced several digital camcorders too. In 2002 came the FV30 and the FV200KIT followed by the FV M1 and the IXY DV M2 in 2003. What Canon has managed to achieve is unusual. Not only are they the number one choice of professionals but because of their quest to create superior quality at affordable prices, consumers everywhere choose Canon also.
