Canada Pharmacy understands Jaundice in Newborns

Jaundice is a condition, not a disease or illness that is very common in newborn babies

. When there is too much bilirubin in the baby's blood the newborn's skin and the white part of the eyes will look yellow. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment found in bile and this is produced when the liver breaks down old red blood cells. Jaundice is usually not a problem but if it is not cared for the baby can develop too much bilirubin in the blood which can cause brain damage leading to hearing loss, behavior problems, and mental retardation.

Six out of ten newborns will develop jaundice within two to four days after being born. The baby will develop a yellow tint to the skin and the whites of their eyes. Some babies will become very drowsy; have dark urine, and difficulty eating. Babies that have high bilirubin levels may also have a high-pitched cry and seem crankier. If your baby has these symptoms, you need to contact your pediatric physician for an exam. A blood test may be performed to find out if the baby needs treatment or not and to find out if there is a health issue causing the high level of bilirubin in the blood.

In most cases, doctors will tell you to undress the baby and lay him or her on a blanket in front of a window so that the sun will shine on the baby. The doctor may also want to put the baby under a type of fluorescent light which is called phototherapy. The baby's skin will absorb the light which changes the bilirubin so that the body can get rid of the stool and urine easily. This will be performed in the hospital although there is a jacket type object the doctor can give you to put on your baby at home while they are sleeping.

Although Jaundice is common, there is still a risk in some babies. If the baby was born premature or sick, the baby will need to be closely monitored and need to receive medical treatments. Some other causes of Jaundice are hemolytic anemia, hepatitis, and galactosaemia. It is best to have your doctor exam the baby rather than you self diagnosis him or her.
