Can Diet Really Influence Conception?
I was reading a brief article recently, in which it stated that potassium rich foods and sodium rich foods can, and often do, play a significant part, when a woman is planning to start a family. that got me thinking, is it a good idea to be able to aim for a boy or girl. After all, if everyone were to pick and choose, what effect would that have on the human race.
What if the number of babies of female gender out weighed boys being born, for a generation, that would have a serious impact upon society as a whole. On reflection, I realised that nature has a wonderful way of foiling human contrivance, particularly when the balance of nature is interfered with. Which is why even when a woman attempts to manipulate the balance of probability, in the end it is nature which has the final say.
I am not sure I would have ever tried to plan for a girl or boy. Maybe because I endured several miscarraiges, so my only focus was to have 'a baby'. Even when I was asked would I like to know whether it was a girl or boy, I did not want to know. I figured the nine months would be worth the wait to meet my little bundle of joy. Which it was. I was eventually blessed with two boys. Not infrequently, the comment " wouldn't you have wished for a girl second time around?" would be asked, but, no, I never wished for a specific gender.
I now realize that I obviously ate a diet rich in potassium. When I reviewed the type of foods which are a rich resource of potassium, it was quickly evident that, if food does influence gender, and had I been young enough, with enough energy to continue procreating, then I would most probably have had a football team, because I just happen to love potassium rich foods. Take bananas (my favourite fruit) for instance, even now my sons tease me, because if I am busy and don't want to stop what I am doing, a banana is the first thing I reach for. Even if I am out shopping, instead of having a coffee and cake I opt for..you've guessed, a banana. I am a bit of fruit fanatic, so the other fruits with similar qualities like oranges, apricots and strawberries, would all be part of my regular diet, also most vegetables including potaoes also fall into this catagory. There are more but, the point I am making is, because of my natural inclination to happen to eat these food types, with a small portion of meat or fish, my boy's were a forgone conclusion, I just did not know it.
I asked a girl-friend, who just happens to have three girls, what her favourite foods are, and guess what, she mostly fell into the high sodium foods catagory, how weird is that? The more we chatted, and I explained how I had realised my preferences may have been a factor in me having boys, we concluded that her girls had come about because she loves Shrimps,Oysters, fish and also mad about Chick peas and Buttermilk, obviously she also ate fruit and veg, but whereas I have always eaten large portions of fresh fruit and veg, she prefered big helpings of fish/meat etc and smaller portions of fruit and veg. Anyway, as I said before, nature is a wonderful thing, and diet coild not possibly be the only factor.
I remember working really hard, long days in my business, whilst my partner worked long nights for his business, truly a miracle I ever got pregnant. So, opportunity for a bit of passion was infrequent at times. I was already monitoring my cycle, because of the previous miscarraiges, so took my temperature each morning, and was familiar with my ovulation pattern, so it was more a question of, could the 'ships passing in the night' arrange to 'birth' for a while, so to speak. So again my guess is the timing of intercourse must have co-insided with ovulation, and because the type of foods I ate meant that my cervical mucus was more alkaline which the Y (boy) chromosome prefers, hey presto, it's a boy! (twice)
My girl-friend, on the other hand, led a more regular lifestyle, so I guess had more opportunity to get together with her man, and of course the X (girl) chromosomes do live a lot longer than their counterparts, which is a good thing because they take on average about five days to reach the egg. I guess she had a night of passion five days before her ovulation,by which time the boy sperm ( last for a few hours) had died off, they only survive a matter of hours in comparrison to the X chromosome sperm, not that they stood a chance anyway, due to her sodium rich diet, creating an acidic environment for the sperm, which helps the X girl) chromosomes on their way.
Naturally there is no guarantee, that a diet rich in potassium will produce boys, whilst sodium rich diets will result in girls, as no method is 100% accurate. But on reflection putting these various factors together may well alter the balance of probability.
I still wondered why anyone would want to know their baby's sex, until my cousin pointed out that she carries the cyctic fibrosis gene, which she has passed on to her daughter. Obviously she loves her daughter to bits, but wishes she could have prevented passing the gene on.
So to summarise:
If you want to follow in my footsteps pay attention to what led me to produce boys! Work hard, eat plenty of bananas, and try to arrange a fun night in on the day you ovulate! Otherwise opt for opulent living feasting on Oysters, Shrimps and other fishy foods, whilst planning a romantic evening five days before ovulation.
Remember, there are no guarantees, but, if after optimising your chances, your baby turns out to be the opposite of what you hoped for, or, better still non identicle twins, rejoice, you are truly blessed, because they chose you to be their parents!
As for the ethics, human nature is a great leveler, and will, one way or another, take care of that!
